So, Like a lot of people on this site I am fairly new to the ATVrider's forum. Already I have recognized that some questions get asked quite repeatedly, returning either the same answers if any responses at all. So I have decided to make a thread that might be of more assistance to any new mechanic than any technical question they could ask. Directions on how to use the search function. This has helped me being a very technical and mechanical person learn the in and outs and tricks of the 400ex and continues to help me with various questions I might have. This is an older site and many topics have been greatly discussed and I feel most people could gain a lot more knowledge through research their problem or question that asking, waiting, and hoping for a factual answer or reply........

Also, I know there are a couple mass threads with many charts, tables, diagrams, or just important information already in them. But I thought if anything I could make one for myself so I would know which thread to search for but if anyone has anything they would like to throw in themselves maybe this will be a great place to do it. I am going to scan some often needed tables from my Honda Service Manual and attach the images to this thread, as well as list some parts from other bikes with the specific year that will bolt on or can be easily modified to fit the 400ex seeing that there are many and can be easily confused.

Step One)
When you first click to come into the forums click the search tab in between messages and F.A.Q. under the ATVriders.com logo....

sheweezy
03-15-2011, 10:46 PM
Step Two)
Red Circle -Type in a brief description of what you are looking for. Try to some up as best you can while entering keywords that majorly relate to your question. Make sure your first few words are more than (4) letters in length. Also if you know exactly what quad you are questioning type it in as well, but make sure it is at least 4 characters long..EX) Correct-400EX Incorrect-400 EX

Black Circle- In this drop down tab, you can either select to search all open forums, or select a specific forum, such as just the 400ex forum to find your topic

Grey Circle -In this search bar, if you wish, you can type a member's name you wish all results to come back as. You can either type a topic and member name to receive this specific member's opinion only of the topic you are questioning OR you can just type a member's name to see the last few thread's they have started or posted on if you like the information they usually put out in the forums, such as tri5ron, CJM, or Honda400ex2003

Yellow Circle -Also in this drop down tab, you can select from when you would like your results to come from, either older posts or newer

sheweezy
03-15-2011, 10:47 PM
Step Three)
Next you will be directed to your results. Scroll through until you find the subject that is the closest related to what you are searching and click on it

sheweezy

Step Four)
Finally look through the thread and see if it is asking the same question you are seeking. Your search words will be highlighted in red. After reading through the thread go back and look at some more. Extra research could never hurt, and you may find even more helpful tips when further searching.

This seems to be a lot quicker way of finding out information for me. Although sometimes you may have a special case and need to ask a question, but after a decade of posts, this is probably extremely rare. Hope this helps make all you new comers like me. Good luck with your builds and have fun!

Or you can do what i usually do..

go to Google and when you search type in:

site:exriders.com 440 kit

^ that will search only the specific site you have listed (exriders.com) for the words "440 kit" or whatever your searching for.... makes it a little easier if you like Google....

good suggestion, and good explanation on how to use the "search" button.
I hope this thread can stay on course, and become a useful tool for many members.

I would also suggest to the new members, to read the "sticky" thread at the top of this page.
http://www.exriders.com/vbb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=410964
There is alot of useful info there, and can answer many of the common questions.

There is also alot of good info in the "How to's" sections.

http://www.exriders.com/vbb/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=137

as well as the other sections, that many people sem to miss.

http://www.exriders.com/vbb/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=21

http://www.exriders.com/vbb/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=11

http://www.exriders.com/vbb/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=8

http://www.exriders.com/vbb/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=12

Reading through the many threads in these sections, will certainly help anyone, new or old, to get better aquainted with there machines, as well as getting more aquainted with some of the more credible, (and less credible too), members here.

Yeah, the google search is also an easay way to search for specific topics.

The stickied threads are probably one of the best ways to find what you are looking for. They are stickied for a reason, because they contain excellent information.

I don't know if this is possible, but I think there should be a rating system for users. I know there is one for rating threads, but maybe make one for users that answer questions successfully and have factual comments, and also rate people who have asked good questions...this way people would know who the best people to take advice from would be...and also people would know who has more valid questions, instead of the usual I took my airbox lid off, do I need to rejet that gets asked almost everyday.

^ That system is called reputation and ive seen several forums use it. Issue comes about when you get someone whose a jerk and clicks the nay button on everyone for the heck of it.

I go by post count, more posts you have the more your likely to have an idea what your talking about. Course it helps to have a good background and know a bit too-then you truly know the bs'ers from the people who are in the know.

Yes very true...however there are still some I wouldn't listen to a word they say and have thousands of replies, i guess its just taking a chance for a newbie who hasn't picked up on who to listen to yet.....without members like you, ron, and steve as well as a few others, the 400ex section of this site wouldn't be as helpful as it can be

When I came here a few years ago I knew some but people like Ron, Steve and quite a few others helped me alot. Over time you just tend to learn I guess. But to this day steve still helps me sometimes or we bounce ideas off one another lol.

Not really sure there is a solution to it all. If I were a newb I'd hope someone with knowledge such as steve, ron, myself or others would respond and I'd hope its right. But take it for what its worth-you gotta be the newb who heavily researches whatever the answer your seeking is-otherwise any old idiot could post advice and you could really screw something up.

sometimes i do some digging if i'm questioning an answer somebody gives.... looking at somebody's other replies to other threads can really give you an idea as to if the person has any clue about what they're saying.

Good post on how to search.

Post count means nothing to someone like myself. There are people on here that have 3000 posts since joining in March 2011.

and Pipeless, i don't know why i don't need throw a shoutout to you as well, i have also used many of your comments for advice! thank you sir!

OK, at the risk of steering this thread off-track, I'm going to throw in my .02 cents.
This is ONLY my .02 cents, (so in today's market), that and a $5.00 bill, won't even buy you a gallon of gas !
It is NOT my intention to change the course of this thread.

I've seen these used in other forums also.
One of the forums I am a member of, has it set, so that new members can not use it, until after they have a post count of 50 or something like that.
But the established members are able to use a "yea/nay" button on the new members, immediately.
This helps in two ways. It allows the mods to see what the new members are like,... and it also helps the mods to a degree, in that it allows the established membership to assist in the management of the forum. (makes mods jobs a little easier).

One thing we must remember here.
This, or any other forum, is NOT necessarily a Democracy.
It is NOT one of your Civil rights to be a member here.
We DO NOT have a First Amendement Freedom of Speech within this forum.

Membership, Censorship, Tolerance, Disiplines, and Omittance,
are COMPLETELY at the Discretion of the Mod's and Administrators.
I for one, like it that way.
It leaves the "final say", in the place where it belongs.
That being in the hands of who own's, pay's for, manages, maintains, and works, to keep the forum on track, and for the purpose it is intended for.

I think a "reputation" function,... set in the right capacities,... MIGHT, and COULD, be a helpful and possibly useful addition to the forum.
If there was a way to run it through a "trial phase", I'd be happy to see it.

Just like Pipeless, I too will often check a members profile, past posts, and see what I can learn about their level of Experience, Knowledge, Expertise, and General Conduct, It may or may not necessarily be the best way to form an opinion, but it is the only way here, that we have available to us.

There are Many members here who contribute greatly, and I personally owe a Thank You to, who have helped me to learn about my machine. Unfortunately, many of those members are rarely here anymore, or just choose to not post as often as they once did. I'd like to see some of them come back, and I feel that it might be possible, if there was a way to filter some of it.

(oh and btw Mike, I happen to like my "blinky lights" so,... http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n148/tri5ron/Emoticons%20and%20funny%20pics/smiley15.gif )

x2

I've seen a lot of guys that used to post when I was digging who have either just stayed in a different section or just got run off completely. Definitely would like to see some of them come back. But that was the point of this whole thread, try to get some people mainly new guys to use the search menu and stop clogging up the section with the repeated threads, If your subject is I know this has been beaten to death but... WHY ASK? If you know you can find what your asking, look for it. I mean the occassional, let's talk about filters, or shocks or just anything should be brought up since the markets change..but 10 threads a day entitled I know this has been beaten to death but do I need to rejet if I add a pipe..come on guys , there is a reason some of the older really wise members have moved to different sections and won't come back to the 400ex section, because they got tired of us young kids asking dumb questions all the time.... we are lucky to have the guys like ron so let's not too run them off, and maybe this section will be as quality as it once was....

But yeah Ron, I think your idea of a reputation rating system might be pretty sweet

great search thread to go with the others around the site!

The search is your friend and enemy all at the same time lol. sometimes i find things really easy, others i can look for a half hour and still not find it if i cant remember the right keyword i am looking for.

I cant comment on the reputation thing much, i havent used it really. dootalk has it but i dont use it at all.

yeah, even if the site had it, people would find a way to make it pointless just to be dumb....but yeah a lot of times it is a pain, but there are your typical everyday threads started that can easily be searched....just don't want to run quality people like yourself off because people keep "crying wolf" when there really is a serious question that needs to be asked

there is a reason other than school that i havent been on here too much the last few weeks... though i have been super busy with school, the same threads over and over again are getting old, esp when people have to argue over things they have no reason talking about or even recommending on. :( oh well, i like the site too much to stay off for long periods of time. lol I get antsy after a while of not being on it. lol
