Sweet quad. How does that ESR air filter kit fit on your Lobo? How tight is the fit between the frame rail and shock? Are you running a CR250 intake boot? Reed spacer?

Nice Lobo. What year is that ? Got any close up pics of the rear and front end ? Also, what are you using for a steering stabilizer ?

Yeah I did end up finding one. Probably gonna run it on my Laeger this year. I'm not sure your Lobo is a 1997. I think at the earliest it is a 1998. The last run of Lobo chassis was from roughly 98-02, though I've seen them listed as 03 and 04, too. Mine I know for a fact is a 1997, and there are some differences from mine to yours. The first is the bottom subframe mounting points. Your frame and subframe tubes join eachother close to the frame. On mine the frame has studs that stick up a few inches that the subframe slides down on to. It could have been a running change that he did in 1997, though. With no tags on these frames it's sometimes hard to tell.

Another spot is the upper a-arms. Mine are a two piece design. The front tube and rear tube are bolted together. The 98+ Lobo's had one piece upper a-arms. My upper ball joints match the bottoms in design, where I believe the 98+ use more of an open heim design for the upper ball joint.

Another is the stem design. The earlier ones had a longer tab at the bottom were the inner tie rod ends bolt on, thus increasing the throw of the steering input and generating quicker steering. At least that is what I surmise from it. I'm not sure if Doug wanted to slow down the steering of the 98+ Lobo's, but that steering tab that the inner tie rod ends bolt to is shorter. This would also put the slot in the bottom frame rail for the inner tie rod ends to slide through in a different location.

Your rear motor mounts might be a slightly different design as well.

Which a-arms and swingarm do you have? I have three different sets of a-arms and two different swingarms for my Lobo.

Hhmmm.....what else.....lol.

These chassis really are a work of art, though. Sometimes I just sit and stare at it. Lol. So much more advanced and altered than both my Laeger and Walsh quads.

Interesting. You do have the older style a-arms then. Maybe the subframe mounting change was a running change he made in 1997. I have two swingarms, both non gull wings style like yours. One is a 17.5, one is 18.0. I believe they also made a 18.5 and a rare TT model as well, something like 15.0 inches center to center. I have an old school set of a-arms that aren't quite as wide as my other two sets. The lowers are fully triangular and they are non gull wing. Then I have two gull wing sets. One that is +0 forward, and one that is +1 forward. The geometry of Roll frames is very trick. The lower a-arms mounts are even narrower than a Laeger or Walsh narrow, yet I think the upper a-arm mounts are wider than a stock frame! Crazy.

I need to check to see what I have. I did not know about all the different set ups. I wish I had some extra parts. I talked to Doug last summer when I changed my brushing on the lower arms and told him what I had. And he said " wow you have an old one " and that it was nice to see it still around and being used.

It's nice to talk with someone who knows about these frames. Because I can't really find anything on the web about them.

Damm thats more info then I ever knew about the Lobo chassis. Speaking of these frames, mine has a vin # and a title. Its a 2000 model. Its interesting to see the difference between the years. My a-arms have the heim joint style on top. I'd never seen the older stle that has the bottom style balljoint before. Thats cool Did any of you guys see the vintage Roll Lobo catalog on E-bay for $50.00? damm. I still want to own it though, lol. Thats a good looking bike you have there!!

Thanks for all the other pics twopump78.

Thanks 8686 for all the info you shared as you will now be our resident Lobo specialist/historian.

This is just awesome. Guys we need to have some sort of registry for all Lobo owners in this forum so we could share and preserve this kind of info (and pics) for future reference and owners. I for one take a lot of pride in owning mine.

Got to take the first actual ride on my Roll just now. Its an 04. Its just an awesome feeling the Lobo, Custom Axis combo. Just riding it in the woods behind my house, I have a 7' wide loop to ride for now with it being so wet. Been riding my 450R around for weeks, the Roll soaks up the bumps and ruts so much better. And the PC2000 is scary fast vs my 450.

I read on the net somewhere that the Gullwing swingers that Roll still makes will fit this chassis. Is this correct? I have a list of questions for Doug Roll and been trying to get ahold of him for a month but havnt managed yet.

I couldn't argue with you there. There is no geometry difference between the standard and the gullwing design, but the gullwing design sure do look sweet. The idea was for more material around the shock mount location to strengthen it, although I've never seen that be a weak area of these swingarms. More airbox clearance might have been another idea. They do pop up from time to time, though, probably always when you're not looking. Lol.

And yes, the swingarms he still makes will fit both the stock frame and Lobo frame.

Thank you. It has very few hours on it. When I sent the shocks to Custom Axis for a rebuild/revalve they said the shocks might have 3 to 4 hrs time on them. The seals where dry rotted and leaking, but the body's,bushings, and pistons had no wear on them. Made me feel even better about buying it. Yours looks mighty nice as well. Just isnt nothing like a Roll LOBO. And as I found out yesterday, nothing handles like them either. I was riding my stock framed R that has Roll +3 arms and Axis shocks back to back with the Lobo and there was a big difference.

Negative. It just misses, its less than an 1/8th of an inch. Just a bad angle in the picture. They are 4-1 wheels, I have a set of Douglas wheels with a rolled lip that do rub and I cant run them.

The only pictures I have of my Lobo right are the same ones that everybody has already seen. I would like to get some nice naked photos of the bike and post those.

I love the idea of a seperate thread just for comparing the different year Lobo's and sharing specs and info.

I'll work on getting some pictures up. I sent pics to Doug Roll last year and he said it was a '99. It has the same subframe as 8686's bike but it also has newer features more similar to norcalduner's and K-Dub's.

I also have a set of super old school non gullwing Lobo chassis a-arms. Identical to the ones on the chassis thats pictured in the Duncan catalog posted by Doonrider. I'll try get some pics of them too. They are old school.

Here's a pic of it last summer after I put on the "holy grail" gullwing swingarm. It's getting a new seat cover this spring and few other thing for 2011. Sorry for the crappy cell phone pic.

Looking good Dtown. I agree also we need a thread to compare the different years. We all hijacked this one. Anyone else with a Lobo lets see it.

Went to the MX track yesterday for open practice, first time ever on a Lobo. I can not believe how the Lobo handles and why anyone not running a production class at the nats wouldnt be on a Lobo or atleast on a Leager or Walsh. Ive only been able to ride for 3 weeks, so my legs are jello today, but there wasnt a quad faster though the roller whoops on that track. I even past a few 450 bikes through them. The little 265 PC 2000 was pulling my big *** (335 pounds) around that track in nothing lower than 3rd with 15/38 gearing. It would pull with the 450s out of this one turn that was off camber into an up 400' up hill section. Them 450s had nothing on this engine, other than it took more work. Once Im in better shape and loose a little more weight the local boys on the 450s are in for a surprise.

twopump78
03-21-2011, 08:24 AM
One thing that I like about the lobo is how balanced it is. Their isn't any tracks around here so I use mine as a dune bike I can be in 4th or 5th gear pinned and just lean back and it will pull the front end. My stock frame will not do that. And going over woops it just so smooth.

I LOVE the old NACS R's. Did you build this one or did you buy it? I know a dude in Phoenix, AZ that had 2 fresh Lobo's and this one looks very simular. Nice!

I read on the net somewhere that the Gullwing swingers that Roll still makes will fit this chassis. Is this correct? I have a list of questions for Doug Roll and been trying to get ahold of him for a month but havnt managed yet.

Great couple posts there! Also, the complete chassis "started" at $8,995. It said things like chrome were extra. Interesting reading about the different steering ratio options. What a chassis.

Yep - I used to race with Brandon a lot. He and his dad were super good guys. Brandon raced a full Leager 330R and did break his back at MotoGrande in Casa Grande AZ (if I remember right). He was definately on the rise before that happened. He bought 2 Lobo's to build and compete in the Nationals and while he was waiting for all of the parts to show up, he broke his back. He healed up and rode some after but his mother was REALLY against it. If it hadn't of happened, I honestly think the kid would've been raging in the Pro class. He had some serious talent.

As far as this Lobo goes...it looks like he took that Nac's plastic off of his Leager and put it on this one. He was sponsored by Nac's back in the day. And yes, Rudy at DFR built both of his Lobo's. The last time I talked to him (several years ago), he still had one that he was going to keep as a dune/recreation bike.

Ahhh, the memories from back in the day when R's ruled...

Here's what I did today. I had to pull my motor so I could get it up to Pete to fix a small leak in the cases!! This is about the last thing that I wanted to do after it was running so great last weekend!! Well its nearing completion! I just wanna ride this beast! Thanks Higgy!

That piece of info was the icing on the cake! Haha!

Higgy, what type of riding is your Lobo setup for?

Higgy87TRX425
10-23-2011, 07:19 PM
Danno, its set-up for dune ridding, My only real main goal was to smoke any Bigbore TRX bike out there! IE.. Laegers, built stock frames, Arens , Houser, JP Chassis, Lonstars, Arens and basically any custom drag bikes out there!! I just have the dirt tires on there so I can tune the motor and ridding it up and down my street until the police come! lol! Dam neighbors! Thanks Higgy!

P.S. I should add that I'm probably more interested in whopping up on those fourstrokes then the 2 strokes and it doesn't matter what type of frame you have I just wanted a Fast TRX!!!

Dan why would you want to ruine your lobo frame by putting a crf motor in it? :D

That's funny right there. It wouldn't be a hack job, stuff that I ride is built right. :p

Im guessing you have already scoped this out but what i have seen there is a lot of cutting and modding to do this. Last one i seen even cut the bottom rails and lowered them to get it to fit.

I had always heard Roll built a few Lobo's specifically to be hybrids. Don't know if they were YZ or CRF or what. I just remember hearing about them and how rare they were.

Nope props there it does look good except it is a 4 stroke lol. What year is that, the bottom frame rail appears to be round or is that where the work was done.

This isn't a hack job, one off Roll Lobo Hybrid frame, only one that exists from what I was told.

It can be done without hacking things up....

Its actually a pretty clean conversion.

Sorry Troy, this is what's delaying some of your parts but its almost done!!:D

The other side.

This was a TT chassis so a few things are a little different than the MXers I've seen pics of.

troybilt
10-28-2011, 06:10 PM
No worries Jody, I sent off the Saber motor to get setup for MX anyway...

..and nothing you build is hacked up I'd put your stuff up there with Doug Roll himself... I've seen your skills!!

Troy

Thanks for the compliments but I'm not sure about being mentioned in the same sentence with Doug R. I try hard, but ROLL, Walsh, and Laeger are professionals!!

Dan

When I get this one done I'll get you some detailed pics so you can see what you would be in for. I know if I had another Roll frame laying around I'd do another one of these conversions on it. Maybe even a FI CRF:D :D

Higgy

2 stroke or 4 those stickers are going to look sweet on this one.

What do you think of this approach?

Higgy87TRX425
10-28-2011, 10:16 PM
PINIT: I think that approachlooks sweet!!!! I'm just looking into getting a bunch of new Roll Stickers in. Alot of chrome new and old school Roll Design stickers. I'm getting mainly chrome, but also some white and black "OLD SKOOL" stickers as well. I'll also be interested in getting some Older Laeger Chrome stickers too. So I'm open to new ideas. However I'll have to put in at least orders of 25 in each style at a time. If you guys have ideas of things you want? Let me know and I'll always hook up great prices for the guys on there that help one another out because thats what its all about! I'm not in it to make a killing I just wanna keep this memoribilia around for future generations to have. So if you have "OLD SKOOL" Laeger, Jp Or any other stickers around that are hard to find shoot them my way even if its just a scan of the sticker and my guy can work magic just like he's done with these current Roll Stickers. keep them flowing! Thanks Higgy!

Whats the deal with the gull wing swing arm, what years was it produced? was it only produced when specifically asked for, or was it made for a certain racer only, or was it made for a certain type of riding mx or xc for example?

Are they called gull-wing swing-arms or is that just a nick name ?

what is the going price for one?
are they made for just the lobo-chassis or any roll chassis?
