Drain oil from the plug on the left side by the shifter an the plug under the tank resivoir...good ideal to change the filter every third time you change oil also. It will take close to 2 quarts, starte at putting in 1.5 quarts or so...start an let run for a few min...stop, wait a few min. an check dipstick an add until full on the dip stick.
Check every so often for proper oil level by above starting, running, an waiting a few min......not too hard at all.

VERY important: do not overtighten any of the bolts oyu remove. Snug is more than tight enough...

heres how to exactly do it. http://www.atvriders.com/articles/oilchange400ex.html

ok I was just making sure I knew where the drains bolts were. On the dipstick it says upper and lower. Should it be somewhere in the middle or towards upper?

it should be at the top or at least close to it

ya they're a lot of fun. I race a few harescrambles each year for fun on my bike. It has a 3.3 gallon tank and pipe and skid plates and other protection now. I got a quad mostly for winter and when I'm riding with the woman. Also I couldn't pass up this quad for the price it was. I'm gonna throw in some valves in it because it does have a slight tickand it could kinda use a fresh clutch and brake pads. Pretty much the normal but it's in good shape for how much it was

If you drain the oil and refill it will take 2qts easy and be fine. I put in 1.5 qts, have the killswitch off, crank the engine over a few times and let run for 10 mins. Check the oil level and then put the other half a qt in.

yeh.. they`re pretty cheap but I change it often enough I never felt like I had a dirty filter. After leaving it a few changes can you actually see any residue or build up on the filters?

This quad smokes for maybe 3 or 4 mins while warming up so it must be burning some oil, should I get new valves you think? It also has a slight tick.

Change mine every change, but I usually ride 6-8x on one oil change at 6 hours a clip. So roughly 30 hours or so.

Make sure first its burning oil before oyu do anything.

More than likely all you need is new valve seals, your gonna need to take off the valve springs to do it tho. Rocky mountain atv sells a really nice spring compressor for about 35 bucks you will want to invest in.

My dad is a boat mechanic so I'm sure he has one but thanks for the advice. Also, I just found my back brake is leaking fluid from where the parking brake connects to the caliper. Like on that rubber piece. What will I need to do there?

It needs an o-ring and a block off if you still have the stock (worthless) parking brake. You can take apart the caliper and get the o-ring out and go to any auto parts store and get one or order one from honda.

If it is an o-ring anywhere from 1/4" to about an 1" I should have one laying around.

What do you mean a block off?

There is a parking brake setup on these quads, it needs CONSTANT adjustment (as in every single time you move the thing). Most remove it and throw it out, then buy a block off plate such as this. http://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/productDetail.do?webCatId=15&webTypeId=28&navTitle=Brakes&navType=type&prodFamilyId=3050&stockId=48247

it is good to get ride of the parking brake b/c it doesn't work anyway unless u adjust it after everyride. but if u adjust it wrong it could make ur pades wear really fast. and u can also get a new cool looking lever :)

also as a side note to get to the o ring that is leaking u need to take off the bleder and blow compressed air into it to pop the little piston off and it's in there

I wll get the blockoff but for now. Iremove the nut and screw goinginto the caliper for the parking brake and the o ring willbe in there?

The O-ring is on the piston inside the caliper iirc.

i just left my stock parkng brake on there but i didn't run the cable to it. you can just zip tie it together so it just sits there loose. I haven't had a leak yet.
