I'm looking at another 250R here in a few hours, and I wanted to get your guys' opinions; mainly, what a fair price would be. I don't NEED another one, but it's more trail friendly than the one I have now. Looks to have factory plastics WITH lights, a clean frame, good running motor, replaced bushings, decent exhaust. I will see how it rides and decide from there. I don't want to have the money tied up, but I love the 'R and wouldn't mind having a second one. I also wouldn't mind taking a few parts as spares and selling the rest to recover some cabbage. I am very interested in building a big bore, getting some nicer shocks, etc and would be willing to trade spare parts for that stuff. I don't like the race cut fenders, but I DO want lights.

Let me know what you guys think as far as a price...I've got an hour and a half before I'm in front of it.

Here's my current R:
It's a clusterfork of parts, but a clean pc'd 89 frame, chassis bushings all new, new rims/tires, Maier plastics, new bars & twist, newer sprockets stock gearing, Sparks TT exhaust, 38mm a/s carb, 88 engine- 1.5mm over w/ RB Racing midrange porting, 200psi on 110 fuel, and the other usual stuff.

he is asking 2300 which really means he wants at least 2000,

around here that quad would go for around 1800 but i would only pay 1700 for it tops!!! with the fenders race cut and not original seat and im sure other issues....

if the cases are brokeen at all, or striped drain plug or not original drain then only 1500.... make sure the brakes arnt all frozen, and the bottom of the frame isnt hammered!!

x2!! i seen that on craigslist also.could be underlying problems. call him and ask what is the least he would take. go look at it,take what you want to pay for it in cash, wave it in front of his face and maybe he will take it. cash talks and b.s. walks!

It must be a location thing...
I would give $2000 for that thing if that was what I was looking for. It's an '89 and it has the coveted 88 plastic. 250R's are like porn in these parts, you can only find them on the internet or in those old magazines in the closet.

but the plastics are cut and the rear isn't that great, I would hinge the price on the Plastics , cases, frame condition, and general cosmetics

if its closet porn its before they shaved!!lol

hey icutmetal, did you buy it? what you get it for (if you don't mind me asking)?

I had it in the back of my truck on it's way home by about 11:30am!

I definitely hinged the price mainly on the plastics; at that point, I wasn't sure if I was going to keep it to ride, keep some parts for my other R, or part it out completely. The fronts are cut which I was bummed with, the rears are good but have the classic pipe burn. Frame is pretty good overall, lights work, new a-arm bushings, top end rebuild, 400ex front shocks, hinson clutch basket, cases are good with no molested drain or case saver bolts, etc. It has an old-school FMF pipe slightly rusted and with a few dents, and newer "Q" silencer. Aluminum bumper and bars, swingarm skid, and a few other goodies. Factory rims and 400ex style tires in good-great shape. The rear brakes need some work, but I have enough parts left over from re-building my other R that I can get this one trail worthy w/o too much investment. Engine ran good, seemed to have good compression and plenty of low-mid range power. I have old graydon chrome nerfs, a spare FMF fatty & powercore silencer, brake parts, axle, and other bs from my white R to fix the red one up with.

I took $2000 with me, but after seeing it and riding it, I gave $1800 in fresh bills for it and wouldn't budge off of that. I think I'm going to hold onto it as of now; it's much more trail friendly than my other one which is pretty high strung.

I went to go pick up my snowmobile from the repair shop the same day and had the R in the back; always re-assuring to see a bunch of guys oogling over your stuff...ha ha

that great!!! ya to bad about the plastics, but think of it this way, if the plastic was mint, the quad wouldn't have been as cheap!

and when it comes down to it you dont ride on plastic!!you got a good rideable quad...

Haha thanks guys; looks like I'm going to keep it for now. Overall it's in good shape and very trail worthy with a few dollars sunk into it.

It does seem to drip a bit of gas out of one of the vent tubes though, even when the fuel is turned off. I know when I start it up and shut it off, there's always a few drips of fuel. Is this an issue with a sticky float?
