I know this subject has probably been beat to death sorry.
01 400ex, slip on, uni, lid on, 416, 10.8:1.
I have a 155, 170, and 172 main and 42 pilot but havent put my motor back together yet to do a plug chop. I understand a 170 is recommend but ive read people saying it was too rich with the same mods as me.
So if you will post your mods, jet size, a/f screw and needle position. Thanks

ive tried it a few times, seems to go off track but ill play along. I even had to get my hard drive out to remember what i have in mine right now for sure. wow...

the problem with jetting is each machine is different. anyone can just get you close to where you need to be, thus the chart i made. it is just a basis to start from for most. usually i is within a size or two of the required main. usually i suggest putting the needle on the 3rd notch to start also instead of the 2nd notch as indicated on the chart.

Motor work: mild port and polish, Hot Cam stage 2, Pro X cam chain,
Tusk clutch with heavy duty springs, Wiseco 10:1 87mm, monster coil, sparks 6 degree key, T-4 or Q4 depending on what I want to do

Jetting:
05 450r carb:
winter: 168 main, 3rd clip, 52 pilot, 2.5 turns out on f/a tuned

summer or above 70 degrees: 165, 52, 2.5 turns out, 3rd notch

400ex carb: 170 main, 2nd clip, 38 pilot, 3-3.5 turns out on f/a

start by using the pilot circuit tuning guide. you dont need a tach to do it just listen to it.

then go to the main jet and needle. do the main first since you probably wont have to move the needle. i would say that a 168 will work out perfectly in there maybe even a 165 but keep the 172 in there to break it in a bit.

JRN2786.......... Did you add a cam to your setup??? You didnt say anything about the cam so I will assume you are on the stock cam. You will love the mods you made and adding a cam later will just add to the fun! But with a near 11-1 416cc with a slipon pipe, Uni with lid on, my starting point would be 42 pilot, needle on the 4th notch from top, and a range of K160-K165 main. Many things will change your tune, like cams, full exhaust, differant air filters, taking the lid off, ect.

Start larger and work your way down. Listen and feel for a over rich stumble when reving out in third gear at full throttle and go down one main jet size at a time till the full throttle stumble goes away and the 416 just rips and hauls.

And be careful and listen for pinging in that 10.8:1 compression engine, you may need more octane than you think, mine would ping on 91 octane on a 80 degree day. I had to change fuel type.

Good Luck and have fun! My favorite place for jets is Jets R US.

Whoops yeah i have a hotcams stage 1 and just removed the choke. i have my carb off cause my motor is apart still so thats why im starting with the 172 to get it broke in. probly gonna take the lid off too. im goin to run 93. but i can get 115 a couple miles up the road if i need to mix some. might go ahead and mix some 25/75 for the break in. BTW im about 600-800 fr above sea level depending on where i ride... LOOK i got my own thread off topic dammit

All stock internals, stock carb, choke removed, hmf sport full system, cfm aluminum box w/ k&n and custom outerwear lid. 170 main, 42 pilot, 3rd clip down on needle, 2 turns out on a/f screw. I'm <400 ft above sea level. I may go down a step on the main, gotta get run more hours on this setup first.

Now I'd say your right on track with the added info you gave me! Yur going to have a torque monster on your hands with the addition of the HC1! I think a K172 would be great with the lid off for break in. Lid off does make more power but your filter will get dirty much faster. I went with a EHS lid that has a K&N prefilter screen built in, it works great.

With lid off and your elevation Id say yur going to end up around K165-168 main, lid on around K162 main. Thats my best guess!

Take a look at my setup and when I was mixing pump gas with VP110 50/50 my jetting was spot on with 42pilot, 4th clip from top on needle, and a K168 main with lid off. This was at 1850' elevation. I would eat my buddys stock KFX450r in the sand drags with paddles on both machines! Than he got a full exhaust and took his lid off and it ended my glory!

Go to Jets R US and order a range from 160-170 mains and get your tune on!

there are already a few in the stickies above also that people look through. there is one for the 450 carb that is quite long. it is bogged down by other things though on some pages.
