So I traded an old jeep for a 2001 400ex. It's pretty messed up but i traded up from the jeep lol. This thing burns oil, has a small leak, needs everything that wears out replaced. So i figured I'd rebuild it this spring. Im going to have the frame powdercoated red along with the front a-arms. Im going with black plastics and black wheels. my goal is to have everything done in less than $2500.

What do you have planned for the motor? Hot Rods crank and Wiseco 11:1 piston???

id be sure to slap on some 450r shocks or dif front shocks along with not skimping on engine parts quality wise

Yes i would definitely do some suspension work if you have some cash to do it.
Also if your looking to sell the R4 Hit me up i may be interested looks to be in better shape than mine.

Thanks, my goal is for it to look awesome but still be a beast on the trails. I haven't really planned on any major engine work, if i have the money ill start small on engine mods. As far as the 450 shocks go, if i can find some cheap i'll do it, i hear its a popular swap. I love that R4 pipe, loud as hell lol.

Thanks for the good lucks. Does anyone have any advice or opinions for beginning power mods? I've heard about the 10:1 piston upgrade, putting a 450R carb on it, jetting etc. I'd like to start small and work my way up on the mods as the cash comes. what do you think?

For power mods, I'd recommend:

11:1 Piston (150+50 for a hone)
Stage II Cam (150 used)
Mildly ported head (if you have the cash)
Header (150)
Pipe (200)
450 Carb (100)
K&N (50)

Should bring you to +/- 800 for a fresh motor that will run well and be extremely reliable. This is what my 400 had when I got it, and it ran GREAT.

Figure 300 for Powdercoating the frame and various parts, 300 for some 450r shocks, 300 for some plastics that will leave you about a grand to spend on all the random **** that WILL come up haha. These things will nickel and dime you to death, but you'll have a like new quad when its all said and done.

ive heard....DONT RUN A K&N FILTER
for off road they let in too much dirt and dust. if you do end up running one throw an outerwears on it. better off usuing a uni foam filter.
