So my son is 13 now , He has been riding a lt 80 for 3 yrs now . He is to big for it , He needs something bigger , But has never rode anything with a clutch . I think this will be the best thing for him ? Tell what you guys think about this choice ? Any thing I should look out for ? Any years to stay away from ? Thanks Bob .

The early 250's (01-05) have auto clutches so he wouldnt have to worry about it, but IMO the 06+ EX's with the sportclutchs are a GREAT learning tool. I was scared to death of anything that had a clutch before i had my 250, now anything motorized with an automatic seems boring to me.

As far as things to look out for, the 250 is about as bulletproof as they come, there built to take abuse from kids that are learning to ride. Just look for a nice one that hasnt been neglected or thrashed on really bad and when you find one just keep the oil changed, keep gas in the tank, and air in the tires and it should do you and your son well:cool:

The dvx300 is basically an automatic with a sport bike feel. I think at 13 he would like the 250ex more. I'm 13 now and I just learned to use the clutch at 12, I'm glad I did cause it's more fun than an automatic/semi-auto to me. Hope this helps.

My daughter went from a 90 to the ex when she was 14. I looked at the DVX at the time but went with the Ex. It isn't a rocket ship but I think it is lighter and she is learning how to use a clutch so she can move up to a "real" race bike later if she keeps going.

The DVX isn't rele all tht sporty cause of the auto tranny and it's basically the same motor as their 300 utility.. And ur rite the 300ex isn't super quick, but it's got a real sport bike feel and it's good to learn on. And I decided I wanted mine to go a little faster and I got a slip on pipe for it, and it makes a big difference. Gives u a good bike to start on and if u start wanting a faster bike, it's easy to find mods for.

I agree, if you can afford it an 06+ 250EX with the sport clutch is the way to go. It has a 5 speed transmission like the earlier models, but has a clutch that you can start to use and learn on when he's ready. It's not necessary and when not use, acts like an auto clutch model. I would have gotten this for my girlfriend, but they were in budget, got an '01 instead.
