View Full Version : danhung11's New Laeger ProTrax CR500 Build

danhung11
03-04-2011, 07:39 PM
After seeing build after build, I decided to go ahead and build another R. I decided to part ways with the stock framed 1986R I built, to fund this full aftermarket chassis. The chassis is a very nice 2001 Laeger CR500 Rear End, plus 3 ProTrax Frontend, and will be suspended with Custom Axis shocks. I didn't re-coat the frame due to the excellent condition. With this thread, I am going to try and edit the first post with updated pictures, then bump it with comments to notify folks of the updates. I personally enjoy seeing members build project R's from start to finish.

So I finally dropped off my parts at the coater on Tuesday, picked it up after work tonight. Wife's out of town, or she'd probably kill me. :D

Stay tuned...

Dan,

Looks like its going to be another sick job on an R by you. One thing im looking forward to that you and Troybilt always add nice touches on is the graphics. Look forward to seeing the concept you come up with to tie the red, black and white in.

Very nice, definitely going to keep my eyes posted on this. I might have a laeger build coming shortly in the future as well! ;)

Flip top would be the only way to go on one of these. I had a cr500 bike and it was an sob to crank. My buddies used to take turns betting on who could start it. I discovered the secrete to it. Only one other person was able to start it and he got lucky.

don't think he is referring to the motor but to the rear swing-arm, shock and linkage set up.

Thought he was talking about a flip top subframe to flip the plastic up for easier starting since the cr500 kicks backward. Either that or you have to pull the rear plastic every time you start it.

I was able to get some time out in the garage tonight, so I bolted up the front end. All Laeger components sure did go together easy, like the arms were fit right into the brackets snug but did not have to use a rubber mallet.

I bought these shocks off 312R1, they are in perfect condition. Thanks Steve!!! Rear will be sent off for service, revalve, respring. Duncan Bumper came off a 450R, it was pretty cheap off the .ORG site for 4-strokes. :p I'm running a complete set of LSR hubs I bought off drtrxjohns, great seller! Nice parts. I am running a Duncan Graphics Kit with a QT Seat Cover. I also found myself buffing out my ProTrax clamp since I had the wheel out already. It shined up decent but needs some more time out there. Anyways, if you want to see pics, they are in the first thread. Thanks for all the positive comments guys!

Its not!! :D just razzin' ya... I'm still waiting on my shocks to get back from SF.. hopefully soon so I can get back to working on the bike.... My problem is what started out as a smaller project turned into a full blown money pit with no end in site! Chrome powder wasn't good enough on sub frame so I sent it off to get show chromed... my fresh Curtis Sparks motor isn't good enough so I'm building a new motor... just never ends!!! I will say this is my last "4" wheeled 250r I'm going to build for awhile...

Reminds me a lot of my '89 with the flat black arms w/ white decals, shiny red frame, Axis shocks and Duncan bumper. I really like that look, and I saw you're getting white Fullbores for it- That will look awesome! I have some white Fullbores on order for my Walsh, can't wait for them!

Yeah, where's the best place to order Full Bores now? I've got to get some. I know a guy that just bought a couple sets directly from Full Bore and he's got me thinking about doing that just because he said that if you order straight from Full Bore, you can get the rears without the indention for the kick starter. Which I won't need since my bike is a hybrid.

Spent some time in the garage last night, even had the wifey help me with the rear end. Anyways, I got the entire rear-end started and the nerf bars on. I'm also thrilled how well all the OMF shroud pieces come together with a PWR radiator, it has the OMF louver. Waiting on stem pieces and work, shock, and engine...

Just curious, do people like all pictures grouped together or spread throughout the post?

I was able to spend some time in the garage tonight, seat looks nice still need to set it out in the sun and tighten some parts down. Rear end is waiting for shock and axle, someone buy my Axis Shock!!! :blah: I've also spent some time at the wheel working on various pieces. I was able to scrounge up every DR billet piece, bumper, pipe, etc. Now I just need my PC2000 top end. :( I decided to go ahead and post pictures as I go, it was a pain to refer back to the images, and paste all at top.

Making progress...that's what matters!

I wish... I'll probably stick with my CT310 top end until I can cash in on a Sphynx. Just watched a video of one spanking a 480R stroked...4-poke that is. I'll just save my new cases for that rainy day.

Yes, it's like a matte black, no texture. The decals adhere well.

The louver and shrouds are both OMF, bolt up nicely with the radiator. The cap came with it, it's another locking feature.

havinnoj, where the heck you been hiding? You still have the R's? :blah:

drtprodigy, I can take a measurement for you. I believe the ProTrax setups come in two different styles, narrow front and standard front. I am not positive on that though, I am sure someone will chime in. As far as VIN, there should be two pop rivets between the shock towers up front. If the tag is removed, someone probably took it off to recoat and never put it back on.

leager-n-ky
04-01-2011, 04:43 PM
Mine didnt have the pop rivets, it was an aluminum sticky tag.

Interesting Denny, what year is your frame? I've learned throughout the past few years that Mark made these chassis pretty much custom to however the buyer/racer wanted, whether wide or narrow front, CR500 or nolink, footpegs or propeg, brake pedal differences, tilt in motor positioning, etc. It amazes me to see all the different Laegers out there.

danhung11
04-04-2011, 04:34 PM
Here's how it is looking now. Stem is completed and on it's way back, it will basically be the only stem of it's kind. It's the original protrax stem that is 1.5" longer than stock length, with a new plus one forward Laeger top clamp - the one with Laeger stamped in. Can't wait to get it back. Also ordered a new Custom Axis shock so that should be here in the next week or so.

Picked up my plastic this weekend, so I went ahead and put on the graphics and seat... I think it turned out nice. The hood will be covered up, just didn't know what to do with the nose piece sticker...

Is Fullbore out of business? I am wanting to go with White Fullbores on my new build as well, and noticed you said it took two months to get your plastics...Whats that all about? Can you still get New Production Plastic or just whats left out there?

It is off a polaris, Walsh sells them with all the hardware or you can piece it together like troybilt did his. You just need the hardware and spacers.

No, I don't believe Full Bore is out of business. I read somewhere they were having a hard time finding pellets for their plastic. Apparently the business went under who was their supplier, thus finding a new supplier took some time, etc. It backed him up, I think there is only a 1-man shop running it based on reliable source. OEM's are not available anymore, you can get Maier's, but I like the one piece design of Full Bores better.

As far as the hood, I plan to run a matte black vented style hood. I think it will tie the red/white/black better together than the white hood. That hood is nice, but it's the missing puzzle to my new CR250 ignition. :p

Is Paul Turner still with DRI? I thought DRI bought out Paul Turner in 89 and Turner worked for them through 91 or 92 then he went to mountain bike racing with the Rox Shox. DRI still uses his name cause they own it. Am I wrong on this?

That is one sweet engine Dan! I love my 265 PC2000, it haul my lard *** around nicely.

Thanks K-Dub! I am looking forward to what this thing does, seller says DR did the complete motor. The 275 top end goes for $1795, didn't pay close to that for the complete motor. I've seen top ends sell in the $750-$900 range used, so for a complete runner - I'm thrilled at my winning bid amount.

As far as Paul Turner, the last I saw him was on TV. He was Jeramiah Jones' mechanic at the time JJ was still racing nationals. I'm sure somebody on here knows where he's up to these days.

I've always heard that was not the same Paul Turner as the one on all the Duncan Racing stuff. I always thought it was because be was Travis Spader's mechanic years ago when he won the national championship on a Roll Design/Duncan 250R. I can't remember where I heard that, but somebody told me that the Paul Turner racing engines and that guy were 2 different people. Like I said, don't quote me on that. It's been so long ago I can't remember for sure.

I too thought that exact same thing... when they showed him on TV clearing the gate for Jeremiah... I thought he looked to young to be the developer or the PC2000 and PT Pipe line up... hopefully someone will come in here with some concrete knowledge. I do find it ironic that there is at least two Paul Turners, and both of the ones that come to mind are involved in the ATV industry at one point or another. Perhaps, they are Jr./Sr combo....

Nice Motor Dan!!!! I bet that one will stretch your arms out when you mash on the thrumb throttle!

I got lost in the smell of race gas, while watching the youtube video at work last night!... I have never had a high compression cylinder that required race fuel, but I would love to try it with this new build....

That's pretty good, I just picked up two jugs for our trip this weekend. I recently learned that VP - Heartland Distributor is located in Manhattan, KS - about 10 minutes from my office. VP 110 at $7/gallon - can't beat that pricing IMHO. Anyways, there was barrels...apon barrels...apon tankers...apon jugs....Etc. Unreal, the amount of fuel there. When you come to think about all the dirt track series, flat track, etc in the Midwest, you come to realize how much business probably goes through that place.

$7 a gallon sounds pretty good, considering I am paying right at $4 a gallon for 87 octane here in New York.

How far are you and Troy from Topeka? I had a stay in Topeka a few summers back at an Army Guard Unit.. Stayed at a place called the Raceway Inn... Right by the Drag Strip.. I was either inhaling high octane gas fumes, or the eye opening smelll of the Lays Potato Chip plant....WHEW!!

I blew my top end during practice at a motocross track about 20 minutes from the hotel.. I forget the name of that place, but it was a nice track..

I'd figure fuel was much higher on the East coast, we are currently at $3.65/gal for 87 octane. We are about 45 miles west of Topeka, I'm a little closer than Troy. He's about 8 miles West of me.

If you can remember the name of the track, let me know. The dragstrip you are referring to is Heartland Park, they have NHRA events there. Probably some top fuel racing going on. There's a couple other members in and around that area on this site and the other.

Yes it was Heartland Park, and they were running NHRA qualifiers while I was there I think..

I had to look it up, but this is the place I was at. Its 20 miles south of Topeka in Lyndon, KS.

Personally, I have not been to Dragoon yet, I want to go really bad, there is another track that opened up about 1 hr west of us in the town of Salina... There is also a nice track here in town, about 15 minute walk from my house, but I think its only for DB a.k.a... dirt bikes...:D

I was only there once, but I thought it was a nice quad friendly track. Plenty of room to pass and get on the throttle. There was a nice rhythm section on top of the hill and the track circled around by the rear fence on that pasture field and dropped down into a long bottom... You could pin the bottom, but there was an uphill jump coming out that if you didnt watch you would carry way too much speed into.

I saw at least 4 young bike riders, nose dive off that jump. They woulud carry too much speed through the bottom, realize it too late and cut the throttle as they crested the face of that uphill jump.. resulitng in a very low nose attitude and a face plant over the bars upon landing. One young 80cc bike rider had to be airlifted the day I was there.

You and Dan should definitely put it on your list of places to go though..

This thing looks amazing. Had the stem rebuilt with new brass and clevis(s), it was hacked in half before to add an inch the ghetto way. I had Mark replace the main shaft, then put an updated top clamp with the "Laeger's" stamp. This made the stem overall 1.5" taller, 1" forward. Now, off to the coater. Shock arrives hopefully on Monday. Cross your fingers!

Someone had one sitting around. :p I'm sure you could get one from Scott, or if he would even sell it. I'd hate to hear what that would cost, since my clevis(s) were $100 a pop. These top clamps are the new style that come standard on Laeger stems, nowadays. I believe the new protrax stems due not utilize the clevis's on the stem, only the spindles.

I got my shock in last night but was too dang sore to mess around in the garage. Tonight, I completed the rear end. Decided to break out a new rear caliper I found for $20, it was robbed a couple of pieces and I ordered new OEM parts via RMATV. Still need a new rotor, but this one is fine - just ugly. :p

Updates include:
RPM Dominator II Axle
LSR Billet Rear Hubs - T, I remembered to put in the cotter pins. :o
New Custom Axis Dual Rate CR500 Shock
CFM Airbox Eliminator
DR Block Off Plate
DR Master Cylinder Cover - going to get new hardware, what the heck were they thinking with phillips machine screws? :ermm: Also tucked behind there is a polished master cylinder

It's finally starting to come together. Stem was dropped off at the coater today, hopefully will have it back on Friday. :macho

Well, I spent some quality time out in the garage today and was able to get it to a roller. The stem I had done is badazz... I want to get it down from the stand and see how the ergonomics are. We shall see hopefully later this weekend. Will also be parting with some nice stuff I've been saving to throw into this. The motor is beautiful, ordering a new piston kit, it will have chrome case covers, and nice hardware dressings. :D The motor is going to be matched with a Keihn 38 Air Stryker, VForce 3 Reeds, CFM Air Box Eliminator, Etc. I hope it performs as well as folks say these PC2000 top ends run. The cases are like new, has a Ricky Stator - that will be replaced with a new CR ignition. No lights on this bike.

That's funny, I am far from a super hero. :macho This build is all Troy's fault, went over to pick up my 86 bike after settling down from a relocation and he had Laeger frame sitting all pretty. After that, we basically parted our freshly built XC machines after about 1.5 hours of ride time. My wife has been great, she basically let's me do what I want and puts up with my crap. Haha!

You mean this bike? I built this in 2008. It's an Aren's framed, Laeger/PEP suspension, with a CT ProX 330 39 PWK - it runs with KSRider's dad's YFZ473 Athena Big Bore. I am getting rid of these paddles - the are too much for this bike.

those paddles are huge. I have to ask, doesnt that sand do a number on your bike? Ive ridden in the dunes twice, I just always was afraid because Im sure sand and bearings are not the best of friends. not to mention shock seals.

little apple? Im not sure where that is. I think the closest dunes to me are silver lake. thats about 6hrs away from me here in Cleveland. Dan, your right on those paddles being too "extreme".. I know you said you are going with the edges. I have to say I was convinced after much work to try 10 paddle gliders and they are whats up... They grip hard straight, and slide when you want to. May want to check them out.

Mike, that LSR YZF was one of my favorites! You build nice machines! You would be trouble if I lived by you. Haha! Do you think 10 paddles are too much? I think its a combo of 10P and 22" tall tires being the problem, plus I weigh about 265lbs with gear on, so I'm sure that don't help. When i was going through sand trails, it'd want to shoot me straight off the trail when I grabbed a handful of clutch. :o I would imagine it was the same with those straight paddles and buffs you have on that bike... I guess I could sell the Extremes and try a set of both since I have two bikes to bring. :D

Thanks for the feedback! Hartwill, Little Apple is referring to Manhattan, KS. Hence, the name! ;)

I should have tried your 8 paddles, but it was pretty entertaining watching you switch tires as fast as I was cracking 12oz cans. :D

Those tires do say Kenda Dominators on them, I thinks that's what they used then shaved them down and added the Extreme paddles.

again not trying to fill up your thread with paddle talk but remember even though they are 10 paddle they are gliders. the blade is about half the height of a hauler. I ran 8 haulers for years in the midwest, when I moved out here everyone had gliders.. they kept trying to get me to switch but I was skeptical. However they actually hook extremely well. Honestly the way I like to ride dunes which is not so much hill shooting mostly riding bowls and pitching it sideways. I'd do 8 or 9 gliders. But I'm afraid thats not be enough punch for you. Those smooth tires actually grip well because they are buffed. But yea little throttle and your not on the ground anymore.

I've worked for a couple shops in the past, here in the valley. I have a place that orders direct from skat track. I can get any combo you want. As a matter of fact another popular thing here is to take a turf tamer, buff out everything but a mohawk staggered pattern down the middle then they mold gliders onto it. That way when your in the hard pack you get some support. I'm not going to blow smoke up your *** though they aren't really cheap by any means, and don't get me wrong an edge would be my second choice now.

Those engine stands are from TLR and Pumashine, send them a PM.

Got the motor all together but the clutch side is not on yet. Ruined a brand new mechanical seal trying to get it in there. It was in there perfect, but the plastic bushing was cracked in several places. Anyone know any good tricks? It was in the freezer for about 20 minutes, should I try putting the cover in the oven at 200?

Oh well, I got the good side of the powerplant. It gave me fits today, don't know if it was the sweat beading into my eyes or the heat. I need to order a few more small parts, add fluids and pipe, and she will be done. :D

Then again, knowing the way you two are, I will just have to wait a year or so to buy one of them from one of you, since I know you will want to build something else! haha

I hear you on the heat thing also, was 111 here yesterday and supposed to be 108 today, much hotter in my garage. Of course, you guys probably have humidity also, at least we are mostly dry. I am usually good to about 104 or 105, after that, it is just plain hot!

Thanks for the compliments guys, this one had been pretty fun to build. Spent some more quality time in the garage today and made good progress. Troy came in big today, saved me with a new mechanical seal and the billet wp cover, so I was able to wrap up the engine side. Need to order a new carb piece and this should be jetted and ready for some heat cycles. In the mean time, will finish out brakes, chains, and such.

One thing I noticed was how close the pipe is to the rear shock, I hope when it compresses some it will get out da waay!

Doug,

Aftermarket frames give me piece of mind that my frame is going to hold up through any abuse I put it through. If this one gets parted, you know something is not good in my household. :D

As far as the weather, Thursday night at 10pm it was 90 degrees with 45% humidity. Sweat just beading off my arms and head, just miserable.

Paging Dr. Puma... What do I need to cure thi disease? LOL! A puma?!?!

rayman - I have one taker on the frame but wants a quote overseas. My motor buyer fell through... It really doesn't bother me to have a few of these in the garage. :p

Dan, is the pipe touching your lower radiator hose ? Something is just not quite right there. I had an LRD pipe hitting the spring one time, but the spring was huge.

I'd say there is about an 1/8" gap there, it's the angle of the shot. I had to hold the pipe just right, then cinch down the bottom mount bolt. It's mounted correctly. I think it's the CR500 shock location with these aftermarket pipes. Pipes were designed after stock frames.

Sorry Higgy, just saw your question. Its a 275cc, newer model with nikasil coating. I've heard the 340 is sluggish due to piston weight. I've only ridden on stock jug 250, 265, ProX 310, ProX 330, so I'm excited to compare them according to my butt dyno. Complete top end is fresh, cylinder was set to DR for cleaning, inspection, etc. This is my first PV setup.

I vote you keep the Arens together for yourself and have both quads. I have an Arens frame that got as far as powder coat, it just needs built up now. My Laeger is halfway across the country collecting dust at the moment. So I have to keep looking on here at everyone elses awesome quads, lol.

Steve, those seat catch bushing are poly. There was a member that made them, he hasn't been around in a while and I list his number. The litterally snap into place and are a booger to get off. This was my last set. :(

I don't know if you need a Puma, I think that the sickness will just get worse with that!! You've got it pretty bad already though! lol! I like those "poly" bushings too just hadn't seen them until I looked closer. I'm anxious to see if you like how that Dr 275 PV motor runs? I imagine it should be pretty nice. I was looking at ur shock and I was gonna say that you should shim your silencer further at least and inch to get alittle more clearance, but I looked closer and you already had! LOL. Looks like ur gettin real close though, Sweet build man!!!

Everything I have, has a price tag! :D Just thought I'd throw that out there.

I will take some more pics when it's out of the garage... I had the chance yesterday to go and burn some fuel with the heat cycles, but family Sunday dinner was more important. :( It should be fully broken in in a couple of weeks. Quadmx, your PM's are full and I didn't want to lose what I typed out on my phone. Here are the answers to your questions via PM.

My chassis is a wide front CR500 rear, it's a rare version of their chassis. I haven't seen too many of them. The front arms are plus three, you have to specify what frames the protrax is actually going on or your camber will be way off (i.e. narrow vs regular wide front) The front shocks are 19.25", rear is 17.5". All CR500 Laeger's use the same, it was the same jig and I think are 91' model linkages. The Walsh is slightly different, they also have a CR500 rear and CRF450 rear. I'd check with Micah at Custom Axis. My rear shock was ordered new, and fronts are literally new, also from a protrax. I hope this helps you, I've learned a lot on this build.

It's a CFM airbox eliminator, with an '86 boot with OEM size filter. I have a used plate FS, it's cut out for a centermount pipe and will come with a billet ESR brake rezzie mount.

trs9102: it looks like that weekend is shaping up real nice, supposed to have atvdragracers and BansheeHQ. I think Troy needs to keep the Saber for at least that weekend. ;)

All you really need is the mounting plate, all other stock pieces are to be utitilized in this setup. I used a 400EX rear brake reservoir with a billet spacer, and a generic brake hose connecting the reservoir to the master cylinder. Those are the only non-TRX250R parts in the airbox area. This setup is not sold in a kit, so to speak.

I hope that answers your question. If not, PM me.

Was able to get some seat time and do two heat cycles, the 50% and 60%. This 275CC PowerValve has some snap to it, also lots of bottom end pull. It will pick itself up off it's face rather quickly in the higher gears. I'm running CR ignition, to the left. The timing looks good according to the plug. Still need some fine tuning with the jetting, but she is pretty close.

Here are some pictures I snapped in this field by my house. I bet the neighbors love the sound of this thing... :p

Thanks All! It's been hard not to just lay into the throttle, at this point. The bike handles well in the field, and mild terrain thrown at it this far.

As far as rear shock, it was bought new and compresses about 6" with rider on the bike. They are set up correctly for me. I'd say it's about 6" off the ground, with plenty of down/up travel.
