A friend of mine was working on his 450 and when changing the oil he managed to strip either the bolt or the threads on the moto. He doesn't want to re tap it for some reason and he is thinking of putting this rubber plug in there because that's what a friend of his did, enything else we shold try?

i did that on my old 300ex and if you buy a drain bolt from an auto parts store for a car it has a slightly pointed end and you can screw it right in there. im not 100% sure but i think their the same as 450's

I would use a helicoil. There's no way I would trust a rubber plug.

I drill and tap to the next metric size

i agree-- do not use a rubber plug--- either helicoil or retap to the next size- is it the tranny side or the engine side?? We had the tranny side do that on my buddies 450 because ov over tightning and shavings in the oil itself build up in the threads and people dont take the proper steps to clean befor replacing the bolt back into the cases.

just please dont use a rubber plug. if you dont wana retap- you can buy a new case half. 20 bucks or 200 bucks.

heli-coils will leak oil....

the absolute best repair for stripped oil drain bolt is Time-Sert kit..

they sell a oil drain repair kit is better than factory threads imho

tap out one size larger then use a socket cap bolt because you wont get a socket onto a bigger bolt because there is a wee saver on the botom of the engine. ps tap with bike on 4 wheels to not stand bike up as shavings will get up inside engine. then flush engine out with PLENTY of diesel. do this at least 20 times with diesel and then about 5 times with oil. you want to make sure all them shavings are out. i have my bike done over a year and never had any problems.

when you tap it out won't you get a bunch of metal shavings in your motor??

Did he strip the engine oil or tranny?

Never use the tranny drain bolt to drain the oil. The cases bend twist and flex to much and it ruins the threads. Drain it from the neutral sending unit bolt. Got to split the cases to fix that one. Lots of people glue it back in there somehow.

I have helicoiled my engine drain bolt works good doesn't leak oil at least not a noticeable amount. If you want to spend the money I would get one of those fancy ones I had a helicoil so i just used that.

i put my bike on a car lift so i could work below it. flushing the motor well out after the tap is the main thing to do

go to autozone or what ever. In the help section they have a bunch of drain bolts that are for people who do this. Just grab one around the same size as stock and tap it in there. Its self tapping so its real easy. Just make sure its straight and put lots of grease around the hole before you start to collect the shavings. I also pour an old quart of oil or two through the engine with the drain bolt out before filling it up with good oil.
