A friend of mine just go an 09 yfz 450r and its fast as heck what would have to be done to a 400ex to keep up or beat it in a straight line.

Got 700 bucks to spend?
You need the following:

Piston $100
Bore job and HD studs: $175
Cam: $150
Gaskets $50-75
Timing chain, tensioner, chain guides $150
Jetting: $50

Even then he will still be faster, but you can keep up better.

I have more than 700 I can spend. I want to be able to stay right with him. Could it be done with a 440 kit and big cam

oh just throw on some NOS, add a supercharger, high octane cam fluid, 450r plastics, and lastly straight pipes.
he wont even know what hit him :p
but i agree with CJM and what he listed above. also with the extra additions like a 450r carb, filter, exhaust, and good front shocks you'd have a powerful and great handling 400.
also for cheap you can change up your sprockets for more top end and that would help in straight line.

Sprockes are Greek to me what would give me a higher top end

The reality of it is, if you REALLY feel the need to keep up, or out run your buddy, you should be starting off with a different machine.

You are basically asking the same questions as have been covered in another recent thread. read through it, and you will have your answers.
here ya go...

use this link to help u pick a good sprocket setting but sprockets and nothing else will really not make any differance. i also agree that in oreder to get the power of a 450r then to just get a 450r. if u got over 700 bucks to upgrade u should be able to sell the 400 and have enough to get a 450

If you do want the sprocket top speed is 16T front, but you will lose power down low.

Even with my quad as worked as it is, it gave me great topend when I had the 16T but I lacked low like crazy.
