Thought I'd start a thread showing our rebuild of Deric's Blaster for the 2011 season of MX. No more mini quad for Deric, it's 300 class all the way now!

Any advice or ideas are welcome:D

Here is how it started, stock motor, FMF Pipe, ATV FOURPLAY ARms, Elka Shocks. Shocks are too stiff for Deric, and I hate the annoying stock swingarm! This thing never stays straight!!!

Front bumper and DG nerfs are for sale too. Nerfs are a little beat up but still all there. Bumper needs the top bracket where it bolts to the frame welded up because it is cracked.

Make me offers...

you definetly want to go with a big bore if cc limit is open. If money is no object go with the la sleeve 240 big bore and put in a +3 stroke crank. go with the power pros or dynoport pipe and a 35 to 36 carb some vforce 3 reeds, light flywheel +4 timing and at least 180psi of compression and you will have a motor capable of kicking some 4 stroke butt!!

dericsdad
02-26-2011, 10:00 PM
Gonna try to get the La Sleeve kit... they are on back order as well as the pistons right now... might have to settle for a Vito's for now. We have Hot Rods on board for a sponsor this year, so gonna just run the stock stroke hot Rods crank for now. Wanna just build a good stron low/mid range motor for Deric this year... so I am thinking of staying at around 130-150 psi comp. and maybe a 28-33mm PWK carb. to further help with low end. A new pipe isn't gonna be in the budget right now, have the FMF Gold/power core 2 on it now.

dericsdad
02-26-2011, 10:03 PM
Does it hurt the handling/steering of these to tun an extended swingarm? Like around a Plus 2"? Or should I stick with the stock length?

headache
02-27-2011, 12:35 PM
id go with a +2 swingarm definetly. helps keep the front end down some.. The fatty is a great low-mid pipe and will work well and adding the compression will help lowend torque as well and give the motor more snap.. advancing the timing helps too. But if you want to stay on pump gas run around 150psi.

Thanks guys. Might have found a good used Janssen round housing style plus 2 swingarm. if not I have a take-off Raptor 250 swingarm and carrier i plan to make fit the Blaster as well. it almost fits like it is, just need to cut out and gusset where the swingarm bolt goes throught the engine case, and then need to properly shim the carrier bearings to the same width as the blaster so the sprocket and brake hubs align correctly. The Blaster and Rappy 250 actually share the same axle and swing arm pivot bearings. I will also need to modify the brake caliper bracket to fit the Blaster brake caliper.

Scott, Deric already has picked out the plastic he wants off of Project Blaster! He wants the black front fenders with the red double scoop nose pieece. He likes the stock style rear fenders but wants new black ones.

sounds sweet man, Yeah the project blaster stuff is sweet, when I had my blaster I bought the air scoops they have, Keep us posting with pics, Blasters will always be fun, And I am pretty sure that all the banshee and blaster axles were the same too,

Talked to LA Sleeve again today.... same old story:confused: looks like their 240 cylinder kit is just not gonna be availible... they have 10 presold already for the shippment ordered, but are having trouble with their new overseas company doing the casting of the cylinders. I guess they have been waiting for this shipment since last September, and stilll no real eta. And when/if they do get here, LA Sleeve needs to do the finish machining and install their sleeve in them. Also, their new piston supplier in Germany still doesn't have the pistons done for these kits either!

May just go with a Vito's cylinder, and for now use a stock stroke Hot Rods crank, keep compression at around 150 for pump gas, with a 28mm PWK and V-force reeds.

If that's not enough then we will up the compression and run race gas.

CT makes a great 240 kit id check them out, also if you go with a vitos 240 ditch that stock cast piston ASAP, wossner makes a 240 std bore FORGED piston, ct racing sells it, as weisco no longer manufactures 240 sized forged pistons :(

dericsdad
03-13-2011, 12:11 PM
CT doesn't make a 240 kit, they just port and re-sell the LA Sleeve kit, which is not availible right now. La Sleeve has officially hired Wossner to make their 240 pistons for them, but they are on backorder as well... so, not sure what piston I will run in the Vito's kit yet.

IF CT'S 240 KIT IS JUST A SLEEVE THEN HOW DO THEY GET THE CR REED CAGE TO BOLT INTO THE JUG.

LOOKS TO ME LIKE THE CT SONIC 240 KIT IS THEIR OWN DESIGN.

MAYBE I MISUNDERSTOOD.

I WAS LOOKING AT BUYING ONE.

dericsdad
03-13-2011, 08:59 PM
Yep, LA Sleeve makes the cylinder kit (has it cast overseas then finishes it here), and they sell the 240 kit. Other companies like CT do custom porting to the cylinder to extract even more power from it. CT also makes a 200cc small bore version of the LA Sleeve
kit as well, but t is spendy. If money were no issue, then the CT kit's would definitly be the way to go!

best part is seeing Deric's face and knowing how much he loves this quad. He has picked out all of the colors and what nerf's etc. he wanted. He said tonight "Dad it is gonna be so awesome... when i outgrow the Blaster engine, can we just put in a 450 engine?"

Ha Ha, that would be one crazy Blaster!

Yes Jag, the kicker clears fine. It cleared fine on the heal guards i made myself that you can see in the "before" pic's too.

I do want to make some sort of filler peice for the rh side of the rear fenders where the cut-out is though.

Haven't updated in awhile... Have the Motor almost together. 68mm MX ported cylinder for now. Completely brand new cases and gears etc., got a good deal on it all.

New crank and Bearings-Thanks Hot Rods for the help!

All new suspension bearings and bushings-Thanks Pivot Works for the help!

Got a good used CFM aluminum airbox-Thanks AL!

Extended rear swing-arm we bought used is actually an ASR peice, and ias all brand new again after powdercoating. Didn't notice at first but it doesn't have skid plate tabs. Hope we don't need it!

Oh yeah, and the Plus 2" Lonestar Steering stem is here now too. Looks awesome bolted in there.

Won't be able to get the new rims/tires ordered from DWT until next month so we will have to start the season on his old stuff.

Still want: V-Force reeds, Keihin 28mm carb, Soft Bars or Flexx bars, Streamline Steering stabilizer.

Pic's coming soon! As soon as It is all together. Dan

Here is to show you that the Kick Start does clear the nerf bars. These XFR Nerf Bars really are sweat!

dericsdad
04-25-2011, 09:43 PM
Here is a bracket I made to securely attach the front of the nerf bars to the quad. They came with the silly "u-bolts" to clamp it around the frame tubes, but those wouldn't work with the XFR Full Skid Plate installed, plus they are ugly! I simply installed two full threaded longer bolts through the skid plate and clamps, then installed lock nuts and washers to clamp the nerfs to the top of the skid plate clamps. With all of the other bolts holding these nerf on It maybe was overkill, but better safe than sorry.

Got a good deal on this CFM aluminum airbox. It bolted in pretty nice, and the big TWIN AIR filter is gonna really help on the power too!

One thing though is the rear shock spring just barely hits the front edgeof the pipe going to the carb when the rear suspension is fully compressed. Anyone else have this problem??? May have to "adjust" the tube a little.

So we rode it for the first time tonight, just before we took all of these pictures. The shocks already are a ton better than they were. Didn't plan on spending the $500 it took to have them redone, but the rear needed to be completely redone including new shaft and lower mount. The bike is totally different to ride now though! A ton better.

Still need to fine tune the camber and toe, and adjust the ride height/sag.

Can't wait for the new DWT tires and rims, but they will have to wait until the end of May.

I am very happy with how the engine turned out. Still have to finish breaking it in and make sure the jetting is good, but so far it feels VERY strong, and has a lot more bottom and and broader power band. All I did is do some portwork on the .080 cylinder we had, I drilled the extra ports from the reed cage area into the side transfers (like on a vito's) opened up/smoothed out the exhaust port, and polished/smoothed out everything else. Using a new Vito's plus 3 stroker crank for now, put one thin Cometic base gasket under it along with the Vito's spacer plate and a yamaha base gasket. Head is stock. just wanted it mild for now and also wanted to still run pump gas. The lower end is almost all brand new, previous owner had it built new, but his "engine builder" left the nut off the pto side of the crank. He thought it had a bad bearing. I tore it down cleaned and resealed it. It came with a vito's cylinder on it, brand new except the "engine builder" put the piston clips in wrong, and it spit one out and scored the cylinder. It needs a bore so we will try it later this year. Stock carb for now. Thinking 28mm keihin or 30mm OKO later.

Man That kicker doesnt clear by very much it doesnt look like.. Is it hard with it being so close? on my kawi the kicker barely cleared but not even by enough to be able to kick it worth a crap.. And for seat cover I reccomend dynamite atvs seat cover, custom with name and number stitched in, (if they sell a blaster seat cover) custom and sweet, or call quadtech, although those options are pricey. Overall bike looks good, I'd do a graphic kit to tie the front race plastic in with that stock yamaha, just my opinion though,, I had a 03 blaster red and black just like that (only not half as nice) before I got a 450, fun bikes for sure..

heres some of the dynamite atv seat covers,

Well, Deric's first race went awesome at first... in practice he was fast right away, shocks were just a little hard, but really close. He was already 10 times faster than he was last year at the same track. In the first moto, he was side by side with 2nd place for the holeshot, but let the boy in. then by the 3rd lap he was catching the 2nd place rider, who was leading, when he heard a "buzzing" sound he said while full throttle up a hill. When he let off the throttle to turn the corner at the bottom of the hill the engine locked up:( .

Deric was happy though, just knowing he will be fast this year and that the quad handles great now.

Pulled the motor yesterday to find the piston badly scored on all four corners close the the pin. Top of the piston is really dark, as well as underneath. So looks like it detonated or was lean...

Could have been one clip too low on the needle, was only in the 3rd groove... but would it do this only being one clip off?

Compression was only 130 psi, and running 91 octane non-ethonal with 32:1 klotz race oil. Stock carb, 35 pilot, 340 main jet, needle in 3rd groove.

Leakdown test was still godd,so no vac. leaks... .

Thinking of just scrapping this carb and getting a brand new keihin 28mm carb, and v-force reeds, then maybe raise the compression a little and just run 110 race gas so i know the gas is good.

dericsdad
05-15-2011, 05:41 PM
Motor is all back together and better than ever! Race yesterday went good, Deric was 2nd through the first turn of the first moto, and took the holeshot the second moto. he might have jumped the 2nd moto start a tad... but they let it go. It is fast anyways... so we are happy. haven't got the V-Force reeds yet, but did get a brand ne keihin 28mm carb. and it is running awesome. We are at about 145 PSI Compression now, and I am blending 50/50 with 91 octane non-ethonal pump gas and 110 Turbo blue. Outs it at about 100 octane. Probably don't need that much octane... might be hurting the power a tad but at least it will stay cool. Now all we need is some more practice for Deric so we can finish dialing in the suspension. His front is about perfect, but the rear needs a softer spring I think. Kinda fun being the only built 2-smoker out there against the 300ex's:D

scotturban
05-15-2011, 07:47 PM
glad to hear everything (except the blown motor) is going good for you guys, Where you from/ racing at? I always liked the blasters over the 300ex's too, kick start and no electronics is great, well at least I thought, Some race pics would be cool too.

Been having a pretty good summer racing. Haven't been able to make all of the races... but having fun this year for sure. Finally have his suspension and top end we have now dialed in as good as we can, and Deric is using everything it has now. If we keep this quad for next year I'd like to somehow get it to sit a little lower in ride height without bottoming out on the big stuff, and I really want to get him an La Sleeve top end.

I hear ya Greenmachine! It is for sure making Deric a better rider having to work so hard to keep up to the built 4 strokes. The 300ex's with the JB long travel everything and PEP shocks set up right are just amazing!!! if we could afford it we would just buy/build one of those. But I do love the 2-strokes. It was fun seeing a Honda 250r win the 450cc C class at our last local race!
