I am looking to race the 2011 season doing both MX and XC and would like to be able to share the experience with the "team"/family in the pits and I know the Go Pro hero HD will soon be mounted on my helmet, however I would like to be able to communicate with them. I have had trouble finding a decent radio system that doesn't need push to talk and a clunky in helmet design that doesn't cost a fortune. I was hoping to keep the budget around $100-$300 instead of $500-$700 that pro teams use. Any ideas or solutions?

I have been told that with Motorola two way units that have about a 20 mile radius that their ivox system allows for a phone like two way communication as long as you have proper connecting headsets but is that a reputable/durable system?

Communication between rider and pit crew is not permitted. :(

Not even for a non-ama league?

You would have to check the rules for that particular series but its not allowed in the GNCC for sure. Those claims on range are exaggerated at best. The only way to get that kind of range with those radios is in the middle of a flat open field with absolutely no interference.

I thought about doing all this at one time because I broke down a couple times and almost didn't make it out. I wouldn't to be sure that someone was coming to help. It proved that it wasn't worth it. You can't depend on radios for more than a couple miles and I'm just not sure that it would work that well if you throw in a lot of up and down terrain. Cell phones would work in some cases but most of the races I went to, service was limited.

some of them you put some band on your neck and when you talk they can hear you. pretty neat. here is one. they have smaller ones.

they have voice activated ones too so you don't push buttons.

That is $110 for just the mic and the ear piece.
