I have a set of razr 2 getting worn down a lil got some chunks taken out of them, and was looking to get some traction back in them. So I thought about grooving them.

Wha are the opinions of doing this

how do you? (what tools do you use?)

Thanks for any info, comments

Angle grinder with a metal cutting disc works well.

I didnt cut these, got em from a local XC racer, but grooving these tires helps out a lot, it lefts the knobs flex alot more on hard pack and hooks up great. they use just a grinder to cut em. ive tried it on a old pair of tires and it is NOT a fun job, and it takes a fair amount of time, I recomend wearing some old clothes you dont mind ruining cause that hot melted rubber will stain bad and not come out. and also wear a clear face shield.

It's well worth it to invest in the right tool. This will get the job done in 20 minutes, with no mess.

So is there any downsides anyone has seen? Beside it takes long?

cutting like in that pic will make the wear life go way down but for racing it doesnt matter. if i was going to be riding with them on anything harder for more than a few hours i would find a hard compound tire to cut.

That's the only downside to grooving. They do make a knobby knife that allows you to cut a new edge, when they become rounded.

now that right there might be better than grooving I would think, especially for just trail riders. I might have to look into that tool alittle more.

this is pretty much what alot of the pro gncc and other xc racers have been running, except they have been grooving out just regular razr 1 tires, I see maxxis finally took the hint and started making them this way.
