2001 Sportsman 500 dies when in reverse

Runs good, but dies when it goes in reverse. It happens pretty much as soon as you try and move it. Is there a switch or something? Thanks

are you hitting the reverse over ride button on the handlebars? Its usually a yellow button located on the left side of the bars.

It doesn't seem to matter. I have pressed it on and off a different times. It just dies regardless. It is fine in forward. It sat for a few years after wreck and wasn't run. This is actually a friend's machine, so I am not too familiar with it. Thanks
