Ok, I'm gonna start with some excuses with my poor english, I'm french and not really good!! Sorry!

Started in Feb with rings and valve seals to change... begin to tear the motor down... and the A.A.D.S take control of me and there is nothing I can do!! So I start up with that.. 2002 Ex Stock bore, all the freebie mods,Uni, smooth P&P, ac nerf & bumper, LSR axel, LSR carrier, houser anti-vibe +1 stem, tag t2 bar, killswitch, DS450x front suspension,...
http://img60.xooimage.com/files/9/5/1/400ex-002-25c72a4.jpg (http://400exforum.xooit.com/image/60/9/5/1/400ex-002-25c72a4.jpg.htm)

So, get the motor out, slip it, clean it really good with bowl thank acid (dairy farm)...

http://img63.xooimage.com/files/7/5/a/img_0065-2477d0c.jpg (http://400exforum.xooit.com/image/63/7/5/a/img_0065-2477d0c.jpg.htm)
http://img63.xooimage.com/files/1/7/a/img_0066-2477d11.jpg (http://400exforum.xooit.com/image/63/1/7/a/img_0066-2477d11.jpg.htm)

After that, my brain just can't get enough of just a simple honing and a set of rings... so the shopping began... but while I was waiting I had a couple pieces sandblasted in my very nice homemade sandblast cabinet!! :eek2:
http://img64.xooimage.com/files/9/d/c/img_0084-25c7500.jpg (http://400exforum.xooit.com/image/64/9/d/c/img_0084-25c7500.jpg.htm)

Every external parts exept the crankcase finally go in...

http://img54.xooimage.com/files/e/b/6/img_0067-2477d36.jpg (http://400exforum.xooit.com/image/54/e/b/6/img_0067-2477d36.jpg.htm)

Then the new piston came in... CP 12.5:1 87mm!!! I went something *lightweight*, bigger bore, race fueled... hummmm..

http://img60.xooimage.com/files/2/6/4/img_0080-25c75a7.jpg (http://400exforum.xooit.com/image/60/2/6/4/img_0080-25c75a7.jpg.htm)

Pretty much the lightess I can find for a 12.5 416

http://img51.xooimage.com/files/3/d/b/img_0082-25c765c.jpg (http://400exforum.xooit.com/image/51/3/d/b/img_0082-25c765c.jpg.htm)

After that I get the cylinder bore&hone, and then I saw my flywheel starring at me in the corner yellin' ''I'm fat dude'' ... Ok dear... so...

http://img62.xooimage.com/files/8/0/e/img_0073-25c76f7.jpg (http://400exforum.xooit.com/image/62/8/0/e/img_0073-25c76f7.jpg.htm)

I cut 13.3oz out of it

http://img60.xooimage.com/files/8/6/c/img_0095-25c7744.jpg (http://400exforum.xooit.com/image/60/8/6/c/img_0095-25c7744.jpg.htm)

While surfing in this forum, some nice quads with painted engine inspired me a little bit, so I decided to do somehing with the motor... began to add a little touch of color!!

http://img62.xooimage.com/files/2/3/2/img_0100-25c77fc.jpg (http://400exforum.xooit.com/image/62/2/3/2/img_0100-25c77fc.jpg.htm)

A little sneak peek at what'S gonna look like

http://img54.xooimage.com/files/a/2/9/img_0103-25c7867.jpg (http://400exforum.xooit.com/image/54/a/2/9/img_0103-25c7867.jpg.htm)

I got a FCR from a 450er sitting there. I had tryed to put this on the quad befor the rebuilt, but never get it jetted right, can't made the motor run w/o the choke on... so its cleaning time...
clean it, polish the inlet, put a dual spray venturi jet kit, order r&d fuel screw (cuz the stock one is a ******* pain)... and hope for better result at the 2nd try( but probably gonna grind the motor with the stock one) If someone have suggestions for anything with this carb, YOU ARE VERY WELCOME!!

http://img60.xooimage.com/files/d/6/f/img_0281-25c7a68.jpg (http://400exforum.xooit.com/image/60/d/6/f/img_0281-25c7a68.jpg.htm)

That is where I'm at for now!! A couple of part is missing. Want the CRF timing chain, HotCam stg 3, K/W springs, couples of o-rings, new exhaust studs. COmments are welcome!!

Thanks for watching french canadian tv!!:bandit:

Forget to tell you something!! A couple parts i'va found here gonna come in in a couple weeks... When I put the ds450 shock, I got some difficulties cuz the shock is 19½'' long... (it doesn't fit really well, I got to compress the spring, but didn'T like that very much... that made the quad 1'' higher, but the ball-joint seems to be a little bit not happy!!
http://img54.xooimage.com/files/9/8/9/400ex-003-25c7da2.jpg (http://400exforum.xooit.com/image/54/9/8/9/400ex-003-25c7da2.jpg.htm)

So... while an LT EX shock is about the same lenght of the DS shock... I baught a set of Roll +2+1 LT arms here.. and I think it's gonna be a perfect fit for those shock and can get the full travel out of it... if not, I'll just buy Lt shock..
http://img52.xooimage.com/files/c/b/c/img_1320-1--2567abf.jpg (http://400exforum.xooit.com/image/52/c/b/c/img_1320-1--2567abf.jpg.htm)

The only thing it's gonna miss on my quad after that for what I wanna do with, It's a stabalizer.. so I found that here too... +2 Eyeball anti-vide stem with a GPR over the bar stablizer... that should get the job done!!

http://img62.xooimage.com/files/5/3/d/img_1318-25c7e96.jpg (http://400exforum.xooit.com/image/62/5/3/d/img_1318-25c7e96.jpg.htm)

Another thing I want to putt on the quad it's a secondary oil cooler... I hesitate between 2 type, and hesitate if I plug it just in-line with the first on... or better go the Dunlap style with the fitting to ship oil on te side of the cam??? Any suggestions? those are the 2 cooler i'm looking at..

1st is a standard style, probably gonna put a 13 rows

http://img61.xooimage.com/files/9/3/5/tic-f9t0wewk-kgrh...-u2g-_12-25b6d74.jpg (http://400exforum.xooit.com/image/61/9/3/5/tic-f9t0wewk-kgrh...-u2g-_12-25b6d74.jpg.htm)

2nd is a round billet 2 pass 8'' long... I think this one could be stronger when rocks flying, the mud can't really affect his performance, but I'm not sure about his efficiency... hope someone can help me with that...

http://img54.xooimage.com/files/1/8/8/ticdeg-ygcwk-kgrh...-9-r-_12-25b6c73.jpg (http://400exforum.xooit.com/image/54/1/8/8/ticdeg-ygcwk-kgrh...-9-r-_12-25b6c73.jpg.htm)

thanks

Holy mother! Dude, that is the sickest motor I think I have ever seen!!! Those side cases look like a crf250 and crf450r! What color is that??? Nice build

400exmxrider15
02-20-2011, 08:14 AM
Btw, I don't know if you can run a Stage 3 Hot cam if your bore is a 416. If you want a little more than Stage 2, contact Web Cam, they can hook you up!

that motor looks like you coated it with bed liner ...should be interesteing too see exactly how good it holds up, i know its good for taking a beating but not so sure on heat! let us know !:D

also curious but, looks sick non the less. Awesome job!

426kidz
02-20-2011, 09:08 AM
yeah def looks sick, just hope it holds up for you...what side case is that, the xr400 or what??...dislike the valve caps also, should stay wit the bronze color

400exmxrider15 ... thanks for your comment... Stg 3 is fine for this application with the FCR... the stage 3 was built for big bore, cuz they have more air to suck in, but in my case, what I'm looking for is to get this 12.5:1 static compression piston the higher possible in a dynamic compression for more HP ... I want more air/gaz mixture in the chamber and the btu's created by the explosion out fast with longer duration of the exhaust valves, that way it help to keep engine cooler too... I'm looking for building a motor for supermoto mostly... webcam or gt thunder cams are interesting, web cam track is my 2nd choice... I didnt purchase anything yet so if someone have his word to say...

426kidz... It's not bedliner paint, it's high temps cooked motor paint that I made a textured effect in it. pretty easy to do and it's the stock cover!! :D For the valve cover, I'm not really happy with it... I use the same paint as the cylinder and head, it'S textured flat black, but I put the bronze color over the textured, and I'm not sure about that... probably gonna sandblast it and redo the job just in bronze color!!

hmmm..nice, stock 400ex clutch cover??? looks like you can remove it lol 3d ;)

sneaky11
02-20-2011, 09:38 AM
yep stock on... I painted the clutch cover first in bronze, then tape it and do the other part of the side cover... I want it to look like the XR cover... Probably gonna Buy an Xr cover some day!! or maybe go with the Hinson one!! will see but I.m satisfy with the result!

426kidz
02-20-2011, 09:42 AM
yeah looks great, had me fooled, lol i want the xr cover too and cant find a hinson anywhere i been lookin the xr's are all over ebay! nice job keep it up!:)

I want a kickstart 400ex, thats why i want an Xr cover..

I also wanted to do mine kickstart, but after reading every thing possible on it, I just cancel that project... not so much to gain for the money you'll spend and the time you'll take... kicker is hitting the rear fender, hitting the clutch cover... etc... I shave 13 oz on the flywheel, you could shave maybe 7-8 oz more max by getting some material on the bearing holder, in the back, maybe somewhere else... the only thing you can really benefit with the kicker is dropping weight with everything E out... but for 140$ you can buy an antigravity superlight battery (o.75 pound) and relocat it were ever you want... an in 5 min you'll have almost the same performance of your 500$+ mod with 1 week of tuning... that is what i'll do for sure!!

Impressive build Sneaky,
it looks very good, and I like the way you think.

"Bang for your buck" value. That's where it's at in my book.
Anybody can have a unique bike if they just continue to throw money at it, but then it becomes so laden with cash, that it is not worth it to continue, or in some cases, to even finish.

You exhibit good judgement, in looking towards alternative measures to accomplish your goal.

bravo pour votre succès

The frame have the original paint on it and it almost in a perfect condition so the frame will have upgrades like gussets, fit a 450r grab bar, i'll put the same kind of paint on the a-arms and i'll see how tough it is and probably do the frame the same way... i'll check for a +1 aftermarket swingner, maybe a 450r 06+ one if i'm on a tight budget... but all this is only for next winter, just can't wait to put this thing together and go do slides on go-karts tracks!!

Thanks for all your comments!!

little vid of what i'm looking for with this quad, this track is here in Quebec.

Like to know more about the engine paint job.

I buyed all the paint in a Canadian Tire... maybe Lowe'S is the same thing for you in USA...

Head cover: base coat is VHT wrinkel effect flat black high temp paint and top coat is Dupli color *Cast Iron gray* high temp paint.
Head & cylinder : VHT wrinkel effect flat black high temp paint. Sanded the edges with 400 grit
Crankcase: Dupli Color black high temp
Side covers : I use Dupli color Flat black high temps paint for this. To make the textured effect I use really fine sand... on the 1st coat, you spray a strip than drop sand on wet paint, do another strip until all the part is covered with sand, let it dry, than apply 5-6 coats to smooth a little bit the texture of sand...
misc part: Dupli color *Cast Iron gray* high temp paint

Everything was cooked 2 hours at 300F in my wife oven.. and I tell you the paint is pretty hard so I think it's gonna be tough!!
 ... good luck with the oven part!! lol!! :huh

that gonna let YOU guys some time to help me chose what kind of secondary oil cooler will work the best for me!!
Thanks for tuning Frenchy Tv!!:eek2:

thanks

Of the 2 coolers shown, My personal choice would be the first example, utilizing a standard design with multiple rows.
Although I do not have any technical data to support my choice, I feel that the standard design with multiple rows, would be a better, more efficient, most effective design, at the rate of heat exchanged, relative to the greater surface area available to the airflow.
(I hope that came out right, and makes sense).

I feel the cylindrical shaped example would have a Higher level of retention, lower rate of thermal exchange, and therefore would return the oil to the engine, at a higher temp.

I'm sure some of the engineering students here, can do a better job of explaining my therory. (Heck, I'm just an "Old school-Old fart" here).

440ex. ehhh!!
02-21-2011, 08:08 PM
well, im no engineering student, at least not until september. ;) but that sounds fine to me.
with the tube cooler, the cool air will only be making contact with the front of it, not the flaps on the back. Unless you found a way to mount it end to end, like sideways, so then the cool air would travel down all sides of it, rather then just hitting the front.
Thats just what i think though. :p

Yeah, that's something I'm concern about, this application will probably need more oil, but if the oil level is filled, pressure drop might not be an issue? What you think guys?

tri5ron, i'll probably listen to the old Jedi and go for the traditional style... if I see it deterioate too fast, i'll make a little billet gard maybe in front of it!!

Do you think is better to run it in-line or FST style??

standby right now, cuz it'S ended up that CP didn't put the good wrist pin in kit, and the second time i start it, it begin to knock...

So open up the motor to see what's wrong... at first i was thinking that is the cam, but it wasn't a tik sound....and find that the wrist pin that came in the box isn't the good diameter... so I screw my piston hole... with the motor running 1min total... i'm piss... I know it's my responsability to make sure everything fit good... probably go to fast, been to excited when I put back the motor together, but when you buy a 250$ fu***** piston kit... with the rep that CP got, it's easy to be more confident in the product... Did we really have to mesure every specs and triple check everything when we buy a kit?? Cuz they told me; An experienced certified mecanic will not put the head on in a similar case!! SOrry to not be Crew Chef of team suzuki/makita mtf!! Now my piston is shipped back to CP then they will make an ''expertise'' and say if I can get a warranty on that or not.. and maybe they can restore it. so I'm on standby... at least My rod still perfect.

The bad: I can't buy another brand of piston, cuz my cylinder been bored for this piston.

The good: CP pistons is supposed to be exactly identical from one to another... but if I need to buy another 250$ kit... that's is gonna be the last!

I hope my experience will be beneficial to you guys when you are doing rebuilds if you are not CERTIFIED EXPERIENCED MECHANICS!! Cuz warranty on performance parts is non-existent!! Even if they don't ship you the good stuff!!

Very, very disappointing.

I would be screaming so badly at the CP rep on the phone they would probably give me the money to fix it right-Ive done stuff like that before and I can be VERY persuasive..

Don'T worry my friend... they now know my name!! Phone call them, e-mailed them, feedback them on the website, my reseller had an hard time with me... real hard... and he call them too!!

I had change several piston in any kind of motors since I know how a ratchet is working , it's the first time I buy a cp piston... always deal with wiseco... and it's the first time I got the wrong wrist pin in a kit!! Wiseco is maybe not as '' high quality'' then another brands claim to be, but I never got any issue with them... and they don't hire lunatics in the packaging division.

Thats the thing too, you paid for quality and that isnt what you got, would really tick me off too.

I too have used wiseco with good success, might not be everyones choice but Ive never ran into an issue.

Lookin real nice, I wanna know how well those DS shocks work with your front end.

Those arms are more like +3+1 I'm pretty sure though. Just curious if it's a typo or not.

Wainting on the slowest customer service EVER!! My piston is at CP shop for 1 month now ... and the worst is that I call them several time and thay are just told me: the expertise is not finished yet... I'm just at the point that I'm gonna buy another piston and when I'll get the 1st back, make a trophy for the the most retarded compagny out of it and ship it back to them.

Perfect fit shock/arms... doesn't test it real much to say anything else. those shocks are 19½ long and the arms are for 19¾. And yes they are +2+1 desert racing arms. I'm at around 48½'' - 49'' inchs in front
