I am changing my stock 15t sprocket to a renthal 14t sprocket. I took it all apart and got the stock one off and when i went to put the new one on i couldnt remember how it went. the sprocket is flat on one side and the other is raised. so does the raised side go toward the motor??

Raised side is out, away from the motor.

interesting, I know no one ever yanked my stock one off, but it was facing with the flat side out when i replaced it.

I would think the flat side faces out b/c if it were the flat side facing in it may be to close and contact the engine cases and damage them.

So which is it?

Flat side out away from motor or flat side in towards motor?

i have always done mine flat side out and will continue to run it that. The plate goes to the flat part not the tapered part, it would risk loosening and bending if that was the case.

looking at the stock sprocket i can see the marks of the retaing clip on the flat side of the sprocket. i dont think that it has ever been off so i gonna put the flat side of the sprocket away from the motor

That is really weird because i've run with the step facing out for years and years without issue. I am running a Renthal 16T front sprocket, I can't recall if it's any different than the stock front sprocket, but it may very well be. I'm going to have to dig out my old stock front sprocket and take a look at it.

Sorry for any confusion I may have caused :ermm:

I’m sitting with the stock one in my hand, flat side out.

On my 250R i run the sprocket with the flat side out. It keeps the chain from running so close to the case. But i have noticed some sprockets are flat on both sides. A Renthal 250R sprocket has the raised lip, but a Sunstar does not. I dont know why that is though.

less machining= cheaper sprocket. on quads and dirt bikes it dont really matter but on hi reving and hi hp motor, like super sports, i always do flat side out, the chain is perfectly aligned then and dont risk breaking a chain.

I ran the 16T Renthal for yrs. an yrs. Flat side out....Flat side out on all 400EX sprockets is the correct way.......but nice to know I guess it doesn't really matter after all....thats just how good the 400EX is I guess!

I think everyone should upgrade to a C-clip like I did.

You can change the front sprocket much easier, all you do is pop the clip off instead of taking out the two bolts.

Alot of dirt bikes use this same clip, Ive been using it for almost 5 years and never had a issue or any wear and tear on the shaft.

I bought a 12t front sproket from rocky mountain and it came with this clip, now I use it on all my front sprokets.

You can almost see it in this pic.
