I know there's a hundred post about the crf450 chains. But i have a one more question before i order my parts. Will all the crf parts work? meaning the guide and both tensioners? Thank you

Im not sure, but you dont need the CRF guides or tensioners-just the chain.

not the tensioner or the guides just the chain. make sure you get the tension for the 400ex along with the guides.

OK i was asking because the crf stuff is cheaper but if no one has tried it guess ill get the 400 parts and just use the crf chain thanks again

I too was wondering the same thing. I too will go with the CRF450 chain and guides and tensioner for the 400ex.

I checked, 2002 EX and XR400 same part numbers for everything.

makes sense b/c until 2005 it was pretty much the same engine.

I know this is an older post im digging into, but I would like to know if anyone has tried the crf450 tensioner. Looking at the diagrams I see that they both use the same gasket and bolts. The tensioner itself though is about $30 cheaper for the crf450 than it is for the 400ex yet they look very similar in the diagram. I know $30 is a small amount of savings when it comes to possibly harming the engine, but if someone wouldnt have tried the chain trick (heavy duty chain for half the price of the standard strength stock piece) then we wouldn't have this great piece of knowledge!

I went with the CRF450 chain ( a known enhancement), but I went with a new 400ex tensioner and guides. I thought about it, but since I've replaced the crank, bearings, basically rebuilding the bottom end. The top end is getting a fresh rebore (4th over) with new piston, rings, rejet, etc... I thought an additional couple of dollars is peanuts compared to screwing up the money and time I have invested in rebuilding this quad.

Looks the same, but its a different part number so I doubt it would work right. If it was the same then it would all be same part #
