I have a CFM aluminum airbox and rather than modifying or hacking into the sesaled lid, I'm making my own vented lid. I have some outerwear filter material on order from denniskirk.com and I plan to attach it to a frame that will be cut from aluminum sheeting. I'd rather not run completely lid-less (that can't be a real word, haha) and I have a ton of time on my hands right now. Any comments or suggestions?

looks good to me. make 2 halves then you can rivet or bolt them together with the outerwear in the middle, it would work just like the ehs with the stock box then.

that will look killer when done! take pics, i wanna see it!

I would drill and tape 2 more holes in each side to make sure its secure.

The four holes will be enough to secure the lid, they work fine for the lid that came with the box. I plan to JB Weld the filter material to the frame and then apply weatherstripping seal around the edge where the lid contacts the box. My lid won't be nearly as solid as the original but I'm not too worried cuz it's not a moving or structural part. I'll post pics when I get the frame cut and then when the project is finished next week.

Weather strip would work well, better idea than more holes too.

i done pretty much the same set up on my cfm box on my 05 450r with the filter skin and also run a filter skin on the air cleaner and have had good luck so far.

Well here's the unfinished lid after cutting it to size and doing a bit of sanding. Now I have to get the outer seal applied and then wait for the outerwears material to get delivered.

The finished product!! What I did was cut 2 identical pieces of 0.025" thick aluminum sheeting (see previous pics). Next I cut a sheet of outerwears material to fit around the hole and the two pieces were basically sandwiched together with JB Weld with the material in between. I used rubber based weather stripping on the underside of the lid to seal the edges. I tried to clean it up a bit by sanding and scuffing the top surface. Does it meet your approval? :)
