My buddys cluch decided to stop working the other day while we were at the dunes.

the engine would rev... when we hit the shifter it would sound like it was changing gears but nothing was grabbing.

so it like was like the clutch was constantly engaged...and it sounded like burning.

any idea what this would be?

ps its a raptor 660. 2001 i beleive?

Not sure, neither of us have looked at it and im not sure even what it COULD be. Maybe pressure plate went bad? maybe all that heavy oil attached itself to the friction plates when it burned?
i know it was making white smoke :P

Pardon my noobness.....what exactly happens when you burn a clutch? Are you talking plates?

Yea, you wear the plates, they break down, scratched and chewed if it got really bad.

But, without seeing the insides of the engine ya never know..could be ok and just need to sand the plates down.

Yeah my worries were that he might have glazed the pressure plate. since none of the plates were engaging do you think this is the most likely the problem?

Maybe, very hard to say without seeing it.

You might be able to fix the pressure plate if its glazed by taking it all apart and cutting it maybe on a brake lathe or if your lucky maybe its soft enough to sand with an orbital power sander? probably have better luck if you bought a new one if its shot tho.

Take it all apart and see, only real way to tell.

We have toasted the clutch on our kawi 450 many times. It usually does this same thing your fibers are probably broken into 100 pieces. Pull the cover off and you will probably see what the problem is right away.
