Would it be a noticable power gain?

umm yess very much so!
what compression are you looking at. that plays a large roll power and reliability wise.

U might as well get a 400ex carb and add it to it. U really need the carb to get the total max gain out of the combo. There really not that expensive.

ok here we go...
you will notice a gain whether you go with a 11:1 or 12:1 but I suggest a 12:1.
also I would get a bigger bore and not for power reasons but when something goes wrong and you have to rebuild your top end again you will not be able to bore the cylinder and use the same piston because you have a stock bore piston.
I would suggest going .020 over or something that way if you ever need a cylinder later down the road, you can get one thats messed up on ebay for $25 then bore it and there ya go............. BRAND NEW TOP END AGAIN.
thats what i am goin through right now and it's hard to find a sotck cylinder thats in good shape.

another thing to consider. I have read alot about these 300ex's and 250's and from what i understand, the biggest restriction on them is the heads and the size of the valves.

i think you can jet a stock carb to handle about anything you want to do to your motor within reason.

I have been told that the 400 carbs are a pain to get dialed in right on 300's.

.020 bore
12:1 wiseco
stage 1 hot cam
re jet

and a high rev CDI would be good if you get a hot cam so you can actually take advantage of the higher RPMS you motor can handle with the new cam.

i never thought about the bore like that! i already got a stock one and had my cylinder honed so its too late now. im not sure if my head is ported or not? can someone post pics of stock vs. ported?

u are right about the head. We put 3mm over Kibble white valves and springs and had the head ported and polished. It really had to be opened up to help it breath. And yes the 400 carb is a bear to get jetted my builder had take the carb out 4 times to get it right. But on the final dyno run he got 2.7 more hp just changing the jets getting it diled in right. Also I just looked at curtis sparks no rev cdi's there only 80 bucks. We also run a sparks cdi. But watch it u can over rev it. U can build a 300 to scream Our engine makes over 25 ft lbs of torque which is more then a stock 400ex with a pipe. And it will smoke 400's.

Yes u willl have to rejet. And ours is under the 300cc limit. We have to run legal, he will get protested some day!!!

Haha true! If that thing had a bigger bore itd probably be gnarly! but then youd have to race the open class right?

Yes over 300cc's is open class. And it is already gnarly with 25 lbs of torque and around 34 hp off the dyno runs.:D
