ok i got the imprestion from 450r fourm that the 04 and 05 450rs are basically not durable for crap. i head the cranks bearings go out constintly and the motor isnot reliable for anything. and the cranks need replace everyear as with the pistion. is this true or is it over eszagerated. wanna buy a 450r and sell the 400ex but not sure. i trail ride btw

This could be true for any bike if not taken care of. I put about 2 years of mx racing on a stock motor and had no problems. The 04/05 bikes did have a crank bearing issue, which honda fixed with an updated crank kit. As for the piston, that is a wear item and should be replaced every year or two (depending on how much you ride) on anything.

If you can find a clean bike for a decent price, I wouldnt worry about the year. Keep your air filter clean and your oil changed and you can get some hours out of it.

most will agree that the 04-05 motor is actually more reliable then the 06+, this being said, the crank bearings were and still are a problem, the updated crank/bearings helped but it still isnt great. the one thing i dont like about 04-05 motors is the press fit for the one crank bearing, the cases tend to wear and then it doesnt press in tight and you have some play back and fourth. The transmissions in the 04-05 are much much stronger then the 06+ bikes

04/05s are very reliable my buddy has a 05 that he bought new in 05 and i swear to you this bike has been raced and rode hard for the past 6 yrs and it still has the original spark plug the motor has never been cracked open once on this bike no valve adjustment no new piston or rings nothing still the same from the day he brought it home and starts 1st 2nd kick every time and will run right with my 08 if your looking for a reliable yr 04/05s are the way to go

if hes coming from a 400ex he might not like the 450, in the tight stuff I was actually faster on my 250r then my 450, as it was much lighter and more nimble!

ya open the trail up and the 450 will bury the 400, but in the technical tight trails,im sometime lucky to get into 3rd with my 450

yea my 04 has the original spark plug, never been rebuilt and over the summer I had to replace the chain and sprokets and it still had a stock chain on it, hopefully I rebuild it soon but it still stays right with my buddies brand new 08 so not too bad for 6 years of abuse lol
