Just depends on the track conditions, I dont race very often but im always hitting up the local practice tracks and racing my buddies and whoever else shows up.

I can usually start in second and be right with them out of the gate. But just test it out during a practice if you get the chance because all the tracks i ride at r different sometimes i can start in second others i almost have to start in first.

^ ditto. i geared down a tooth up front and second works well.. if you don't get too much traction off the gate and bog.

Set up your gearing so you can take off in 2nd gear. You want to avoid 1st gear pretty much all together to try and avoid accidentally shifting into neutral.

depends on your quad but on my ltr i started in second just fine. with my kfx I start in second and immediately(sp) shift to thrid that way its not spinning.

I usually start in 2 and feather the clutch.

Should be in 2nd all the time. i adjust if i spin or if the bike bogs by body position, throttle control, and the clutch

2nd, it took me forever to be able to start in 2nd, i used to be afraid to stall so id start in first and always got a bad start, first your going to get a much better jump right off the line, but its 100% useless because while your shifting to second, not only are you risking hitting neutral, everyone will gain a quad length on you, i took the jutter spring out of my clutch and played around with my gearing and 2nd gear starts came alot easier to me

3rd gear for me, but I have the motor and gearing to do it. 2nd is just to short for me, 3rd works great and I get huge holeshots most of the time!

i think its all preference, gearing and motor, ive gotten many holeshots, always first on dirt instant jump and i kept my toe hooked under the shifter so i could shift right away

Always second for me, i spin too much in first gear, but KTM motors are known for have short gearing from the factory.

mostly first but sometimes 2nd. it depends what surface and such you are on. 1st works on getting a great jump on concrete sometimes, depends how clean and prepped ur gate is. its all in the feel.

I can tell some guys on here could use a trip to Dream Camp 2011!!! lol Try second gear, rev it just to the limiter, then ease the clutch out, letting it slip, not letting the wheels spin out. Definately don't dump the clutch !! Body position and clutch will controll the traction ! .....That was free advice - unfortunately Dream Camp with 5 national pro's will cost ya a thousand bucks !
