View Full Version : Laeger CR500, Airboot, Centermount Exhaust Clearance?

Anyone know if you can run an ESR Centermount style exhaust on a Laeger CR500 rear setup with no air box? Probably run their air box eliminator kit, 38-39 PWK carb. I know it gets kind of tight with a OEM style setup, but it works. Is there a specific air boot you need to run?

Any information would be appreciated. Pictures would be a bonus.

Thanks,
Dan

The ESR center mount pipe won't clear the shock on a CR500 narrow Laeger bike. The last time I was at ESR, I looked into it. We didn't actually mount the pipe up but I currently run a TRX5 with a PEP rear shock. I had to rotate the spring so that the pipe sits slightly between the coils rather than touching all the time. ESR's center mount pipe is bent about 1" farther toward the shock, so it won't fit. I also had trouble with their airbox eliminator kit. I had to bend the aluminum tube into an oval to get it to clear the shock, and it still touches. If you order an airbox eliminator kit, make sure you specify that your subframe is round tubing and not the stock square tubing. The billet bracket for the brake resevoir will come with a square if you don't specify. I haven't had any luck with anything from the engine back fitting the Lager Chassis without modifications. My PEP shock might be part of the problem. The spring is like 4" wide and all the way to the top of the shock. If I investigated, I am sure there is another manufacturer out there with a cr500 shock that has a smaller outside diameter.

Thanks for the reply, looks like I will be trying to test them both out. In looking at my frame, it looks like the upper shock mount is pushed to the right that it might cause issues. I have both TRX5 Centermount and Sidemount, it's just too dang cold in the garage to tear them both down to test fit the pipes. I've also heard ESR pipes do not work with Laeger Narrow fronts, mine is a standard front.

As far as your ESR eliminator kit, you should try this with an 1986 air boot. You can get them on eBay, works pretty good. Don't mind the UNI, it was test fitting only.

I ran that style of plate prior to buying my eliminator kit. I like the kit better than the plate but its almost a tie. Looking at your center mount, there isn't nearly that much room on my frame and my shock sits a bit higher up than yours, or at least my spring sits higher on my shock.

We did the exact same opposite. I couldn't keep that ESR kit from coming off! LOL!

Keep in mind, this is an OEM linked rear so the shock mount is dead center, whereas the CR500 are offset to the right.

I'm not sure why...anyone want to chime in?

Dan, I'm pretty sure the CR500 shock sits farther forward in the frame. The kick to right helps it clear the carb.

Thanks Pete. You mind sharing what you are running for airbox setup? Maybe snapping a couple more pics so I can see more of your complete breathing setup?

It works like a charm. I like it because it's more stable than the ESR eliminator and utilizes the stock boot with is much better than that rubber tube and 6" aluminum tubing.

Hey Redred, I was examining your clutch cover. It appears to be covered with bedliner or some type of wrinkle paint or powder. That looks neat but the mounting plate for the quick change is not covered with the same texture. I was wonder how you secured the plate to the cover?

My plate is installed via JB Weld which until now I have kept a secret but I am now thinking that more of the quick changes are that way than I realize???

That coating is actually wrinkle black powdercoating. The mod was done after the powder coat and welded in.

Ah, well I guess my secrets out anyway. I was in a hurry and didn't want to drag out the Tig, so I figurred I would just weld it correctly later..... that never happened. It doesn't leak at all so its one of those fix it when it breaks things.
