In my local paper there is a 86 250r for sale, it has a 350x motor in it though, can someone please tell me about the 350x motor. 2 or 4 stroke? and how much horse power it makes? Do you think this is a good buy for $2500

The 350x is a 4 stroke.

ATC 350X
displacement: 349cc
bore x stroke: 81x68mm
compression ratio: 8.5:1
carburetion: 34mm Keihin
transmission speeds: 6

Im not sure about HP output, but they are a good motor from what i have heard and seen.

yeah i would say thats a good deal.A 350x in a 3 wheeler frame will run with a 400ex from what i heard.

I wouldn't jump into the deal. Someone changed the motor so you'll have to make sure it was done right, and find out more about the 350X motor. I think they were comparable to the 250r power stock. But there aren't nearly as many hop-up parts for a 350X motor as for a 250r. Also, certain things like pipes might have to be custom made since the original bike was a trike.

if the weight of the 350x motor is comparable to that of a 400ex, why dont many racers use that if like somebody already mentioned it has a 6th gear. from what ive heard thats the biggest prob with 400ex to 440 racers. but if everything was comparable would that seem a decent alternative? just make it 440, same weight plus 6th gear.

o well im wrong, but i wanna hear why lol.

andrew makes a few good points look it over
& maybe consider putting a R motor back in it
unless you dont like 2 strokes

I was looking at this quad for a friend and it was in his price range. I thought it wouldn't be bad since you can always put the original motor back in it. Plus its a 250r frame and suspension. Also are the ATC 250r three wheelers motor the same as the quad?

If the frame has been modified to accept the 350x, is it going to be as simple as "just put the R motor back in?"

I beleive 85 atc will work ,I know 86 ATC will work in a 86 TRX

the 85 and up atc motors were liquid cooled, the 84 and down were air cooled. the 85-86 motor is the same, after that, they changed minor things every year.

I'm 99.9% sure the 350X and the 250r (both atc and trx) use different motor mounts, so even if you can find a decent 250r motor (which will probably run you at LEAST a grand) you will have to do lots of cutting and welding, which we all love dont we? hehe
If he wants a 250r with a 350x motor I'd say go for it. If he wants a 250r with a 250r motor i'd pass it up in a heartbeat.
I say this assuming the rest of the bike is in good condition. Frame cracks, bends, welds, unusual things sour the deal further. Unless he's looking for 250r geometry with 4 stroke grunt I would pass this deal up.
