Just traded my 250R for a 400ex last weekend and the guy a traded with gave me a 426 piston and stage two hot cam along with the 400. The bike already has full HMF exhaust, air filter, and has ben jetted for the exhaust. I really don't want to spend the money to put the piston in and possibly hurt the reliability or gas milage of the four wheeler because I mostly trail ride. Would it be worth it to just throw in the cam? Would I get good power gains and would I need to do any other mods to the motor?

imo yeah it would be worth putting the cam in there by itself as long as it is indeed a stage 1. it will give it a bit better mid with a bit more top then the stocker does without sacrificing the top end. although it all depends on where you want the power to be. for more low end stay with the stocker.

what made you get rid of the r?

I liked the R but I was really tired of riding a two stroke in the woods when all my friends have 450s and it had about 2 inches of ground clerance and i didnt feel like spending the money for bigger wheels and tired, I hung up on everthing. The 400 has long travel a arms and suspension so I'm hoping the ride will be a lot smoother too. The hotcam is a stage two, I like the low end power it has now but I just want a little more overall power to keep up with all the 450s.

did you change it to a stage 2 or did i read it wrong lol. i wouldnt run a stage 2 on a stock internals engine, imo it hurts the dynamic compression too much to make it worth while without more compression.

that def sounds like a nice setup for sure! steve

I think you might have read it wrong haha would it be worth it to put in the piston and cam? I'm a 20 year old college student with too many toys already so I'm tight with my money lol And I don't want to hurt the reliability of the engine because I don't want to get stuck on a trail wiht a blown or locked engine (happened with the R). What do you think about rev limiters? I found a few ones on ebay for cheap.

imo it would if you can swing it. I know the feeling, im 22 and have way too many things to list again lol. my bad on reading it wrong, i thought it was a stage 1 in the first post. lol the only real worry about the 426 is that it gets a bit warm but if you pay attention to it, it isnt really a big deal from what i have heard. just dont let it sit and idle for 5 minutes or something. in that case turn it off instead. I think rev boxes are a waste of money but some people will swear by them. if you need the extra 1000 rpms you should be shifting sooner i guess. keep the money and put it toward a spal fan setup or a bigger oil cooler to help that 426 stay cooler. then when you want to, drop the 426 in there with the stage 2 and really have alot of fun. steve

haha yea that is true, I think I'll just toy with it this summer and then spend the money, tear it down, and drop the 426 in and maybe some other goodies next winter. Thanks for the help man!

like you said, you may really enjoy just how it is setup now and might not want to do anything else to it.

very unlikely but hey never hurts to think that you wont spend money... right? HAHA

no problem, enjoy the new 400. :D steve

Stage 2 will hurt the overall performance since its designed for a larger bore. Could put the piston in or trade the stage 2 for a stage 1

youngins...im 25..
