it to snowy for the ole cr so i took my dads 99 400ex out for a ride...so later on i stopped turned it off ther tried to turn it back on. usually when you try to start it you can hear the piston make the puh puh puh puh sound before it starts but it didn't this time. you can hear something electrical moving but the motor doesn't turn over. what causes that? it does it every now and then.

the relay is acting up. this is very common on 400ex's, especially if it is older. when mine was going bad it always seemed to be much worse when it was cold outside. they're about $60 to replace :(

Use an automotive one... 7 bucks and it has lasted and not broken or hurt anything yet. I've gotten it muddy, sandy, snowy, etc..... Still workin great!! I went threw two 60 dollar ones in a year... the $7 one works way better...

it seems to happen after i crash or stall it out and try to start it. it starts up after i let off and push it again so it's all good just wasn't sure what caused it, thanks.

Pretty dang sure a relay for a plow would work and is almost the same exact thing.

Is it a clicking or a whirring noise?

just imagine pushing the ignition and you can hear the starter/stator or wtf ever turns the motor over run but the crank doesn't even move. pretty much it's trying to turn the motor over but the crank stays still.

X2 if its spinning really fast but not turning the motor chances are it snapped the bolts in the starter clutch

it rarely does it so maby it can be the gears on the starter clutch? possibly.

its most likely the starter clutch. its just a one way bearing, so no bolts break or anything, it just doesn't grab anymore. mine also did it intermittently until it went out completely. its not too hard to replace.. mostly just taking the stator and stator cover off.. then the flywheel.

O its been a while since i had mine off but i always snapped bolts on the Starter clutch on my 02 raptor 660.
And actually shattered 2 of the one way gears.
