I'm looking for a stock stem for my 88 and was wondering if the stems are all the same from 86-89? Thanks!

I think there was different part #s could have just been the little helmet holder. I can check this weekend but I think either will fit. If you are looking to buy one let me know.

I believe the only difference is the 86's had the light bolted to the steering stem. So it had 2 bolt holes on either side. The 88 did not have the mount bolted to the stem, so the bolt holes may not be there. Otherwise everything is the same as far as i know.

i think all years still had the bolt holes for the headlights, even though they changed mounts. I ran a 86-87 style headlight on my 88, but that was 10 years ago.

All stems will fit all years. There are some differences on the top though. The helmet holder is a welded hook on the 88-89 and it doesn't have holes for the headlight, but they can be drilled. The 86-87 has drilled, tapped holes for both the headlight and helmet holder. The 86 shaft is different from the 87-89 shaft on the bottom, and if you're buying used try to stay away from one of these unless absolutely necessary. The tie rod plate on an 86 is a two layer set-up. With the upper layer having larger, squared off holes to hold the flats of the tie rod stud. These will round out with age and it makes tightening the tie rod very difficult since it will spin and it's impossible to get a wrench on the flats. The 87-89 do not have this second plate and you can use a 14mm wrench to hold the stud on the flats.
