nope. just the right side cover and the valve cover have to come off. the clutch basket and a few other things need to be unbolted to get the chain off. it can be lifted off the cam sprocket and dropped through to the bottom. steve

Buy a clutch basket holding tool, really worth it.

Also replace the chain with a CRF450 chain from 2002 or so. Its much cheaper and stronger than the EX chain.

Your also gonna want a manual, will tell you the proper torque specs and how to do it. You can find them for free on the net.

One last thing, if your gonna replace the chain replace the auto spring tensioner (thing on the side of the cyl) and both guides as well.

Thanks so much for the fast replies. Alright so about this crf450 chain, will this chain work like the OEM 400ex one? Is it the same length and width? And how much is a basket holder tool? it seems the crf450 chains are around 45$ is that about right?

The crf chain will work just the same as the stock one. It just stronger and cheaper. If u get one, set the stock chain next to the crf chain. You'll visually see a difference. The crf links r thicker. I've run one for about 2 1/2 years and have never had any problem. I also always put blue locktight on the cam gear bolts. You have the take the gear off to get the chain out/in.

That crf chain looks much wider than the 400ex chain. Are you sure clearence won't be an issue? I apologize about how long it takes me to reply to everybody. I recently moved and we have yet to get internet hooked up. I really need to get this 416 back up and running again, I miss it terribly lol. I appreciate everybody's help! Thanks

best place to buy the jets aside from a dealer is jetsrus.com They are rather cheap and ship fast.

What do you guys think about buying a used timing chain?

i wouldn't its really not much for the new one and with all the work that goes into replaceing the chain it would really suck to do it again in a short time and u would have to then pay for a new chain and a new gaskit.

do it right the first time and u will save money in the long run.

I just picked up a hotcam and I am going to be replacing the cam chain with the CRF chain. Since the cam chain is wider than the stock ex chain do I need to buy the CRF chain guides or would the ex one work?

Your ex's will work fine. Just check them for wear. If the edge's r wore of the guide. Its bad. It will causes the timing chain to side off. Check your tensioner too. Good way to check the tensioner it to put up aginist a hard surface and push it in. If it goes in by pushing it. It's bad.

Alright I'll keep that in mind. I think I should be ok without purchasing guides or a tensioner, it's an 07 and I haven't ridden my quad much, so hopefully I can get away with just the chain. Thanks for your help.

Question, would the CRF cam chain guides fit in our quads?
