Should you replace the oil cooler when rebuilding engine, or only if it blew up with shavings in filter?

only time you need to replace it is when you have alot of shavings in the oil. unless it leaks or has a clog its fine

Disconnect the lines by the case and flush it and the lines out with brake cleaner, the blow then out with compressed air (low pressure). It's what they do to the transmission cooler and lines when your tranny drops a load in the lines.

that will not work at all, it doesnt push anything out of the lines, they make a trans cooler flush, its an aresol can that works like drain cleaner. it foams up as it comes out to help push stuff out but it does not work either, ive tried the flush can on the oil cooler and still had some left over metal when i rebuilt it. the brake cleaner and air will not do anything at all. used oil coolers are all over ebay for cheap, just get one from one of the salvagers because they dont usually sell stuff that blew up.

the flushes do not work, there is no need to do anything if no metal went through it. end of story

Flushing them out, does work. Brake cleaner, blow out with air. Then parts degreaser, flush with water hose, multiple times. Blow dry with air. You'll be surprise with the results. :D
