Well, I was able to pick up a new 2008 Honda 400ex and it will be featured in the Hiper booth at the Indy Dealer Show and then I will be racing this bike in the 2011 GNCC Series in the Sport class. It has been a few weeks since I got the bike but i've gotten a few things for it already. I'll update this as I go along.

gpd005
01-14-2011, 09:12 AM
This is actually a used bike, it just hasn't been used very much to say the least! It is still in showroom condition!

I have Powermadd as a sponsor this year so It will be sporting Powermadd guards and wraps.

I ran this class back in 2009 and had really good luck with a CPP Stabilizer so I have chosen to go that route again on this bike. He has updated his design since then and it is still an awesome piece to add to any bike.

gpd005

The rear shock went off to GT Thunder for a rebuild and XC Link and the front end is also bereplaced with GT Thunder componets.

gpd005
01-14-2011, 09:18 AM
after a few anxious days of waiting the HLS Shocks and GT Thunder a-arms are in and going on the bike. This is an awesome set up and witht he new rear end this bike should handle great.

I have several items out being Powder coated right now. It will also be sporting 450 Spindles up front and 450 brakes all the way around. Plastic color will eventually be Red/Black but i doubt it is that color for the dealer show. It will be sporting Hiper wheels and Pro-fills along with a few other goodies. I will try to keep this thread updated as I go along but that is all the pictures I have at this time. Keep an eye out for more updates and I'm sure there will also be pictures of it in Pappy's coverage of the dealer show.

Thanks!

Basically where ever GNCC says we are going is where i ride. Or we have a couple hundred acres behind my house we ride on.

Very nice, I like the way its coming along.

What size arms are those? Stock or +?

Looks like it is going to look great.

Can't wait to see more.

chrisrzz1012
01-17-2011, 05:01 PM
Thats cool somebody is gonna race another 400x/400ex. I only race 400ex/x's.

gpd005
01-18-2011, 08:38 AM
I'm going back to the 400 so that I can pit for all of the other guys that I race with who run in the afternoon class. Plus, I just like the 400 better than the 450. 9 times out 10 you don't use all of the power that a 450 offers anyway. I will be running Hiper's with GBC Tires this year due to sponsorship. A-arms are +2+1's but then I run 4:1 front wheel's which puts me just under 46"

Well, I had quad wood there for a little bit.

But now I'm going limp waiting around on progress.

It's kinda like waiting on a drunk girl to wake up.

LOL... I'm full of it this morning.

Seriously though, looking forward to some progress pics.

01-23-2011, 02:57 AM
just asking but why 450r honda shocks

Shawthy33
01-24-2011, 06:43 AM
450r shocks with minimal mods make a great upgrade over the stock pogo-stick 400ex shocks. A lot of guys around here have them, and plenty of posts about them if your interested.

gpd005
01-24-2011, 06:51 AM
sorry for the delay fella's, but nothing new to post. I'll have my Powder coated parts back later this week and also a few new goodies ;) I spent most of the weekend working on my truck and ice fishing but not much has changed.

As for the shocks these are actually aftermarket shocks that are made for the 400ex. But on my last 400 it did have 450R shocks on it and it was a lot better than stock shocks that's for sure. Check back in a few day's and we should have a few updates.

I did get my hipers in and will also be going with the Precission stabilizer and bar clamp so if anyone is interested in my brand new CPP stabilizer I guess it's for sale now.

I've got the HLS elite shocks on my 400ex, I think your going to love them over the 450r's

gpd005
01-25-2011, 08:39 AM
Nothing much to see here but I did get the sparks timing advance key installed last night. If your running a stock bore engine this is an awesome mod that can be done in just a few min.

gpd005
01-25-2011, 08:40 AM
I also got a teaser picture from my buddy who is doing my powdercoat. I earned national number 75 in 2010 so he thought this would be a cool little accent piece.

gpd005
01-28-2011, 12:24 PM
Okay, I got some new brake lines installed last night, stainless steel braided lines front and rear. But there really isn't much to see there, just new brakes lines. However the UPS/Santa came by today and dropped off a package!!!

gpd005
01-28-2011, 01:07 PM
I also picked up a set of Precision bar clamps which are a really cool product. These flex when you put pressure on them but they don't wear out or seize up like similar products.

And before anyone asks NO that is not the invoice for these products in the picture that is something else that was laying on my desk at work. I figured I would just throw that out there before someone said something about it.

MtnEX
01-28-2011, 08:45 PM
I'm wanting the same two products.

So I can't wait to see what you think of them.

I also can't wait to see more pictures of this build.

gpd005
02-11-2011, 07:49 AM
well, just like normal it's going to come down to the last second to have everything ready for the dealer show. I did get some tires mounted up last night and the UPS man is coming to my house today with a bunch of goodies. So a couple all nighters over the weekend and Monday night and Tuesday and it should be ready to ride!

Thanks man, the tank holds 2.6 gallons and right now no one makes an aftermarket tank for it, so we have made a pvc quickfill for it to speed up the pit stops that are going to have to happen at the nationals this year.

It is a GT Thunder link but it uses the stock dog bone is what most people call them. It just looks a little different than the older models. There is nothing actually different between the too just the look.

As for the non rezzie fronts, they may fade a little but not enough to make a difference for me. They do need to be serviced more often but GT Thunder can take care of that for very little $$$.

I got my last load of goodies last night and was up till 1:00 this morning installing them.

New Big Gun Full Exhaust system and Maier plastics.

gpd005
02-16-2011, 06:32 AM
I am on a team with 5 other guys and all of our bikes look very similar with the red/black combo

gpd005
02-16-2011, 06:33 AM
I didn't get a pic with just the new plastics from Maier by you can see them in this one and the new exhaust system. A few of the graphics have gone on it by this point too.

Sorry for the picture quality they are from my phone but i'll have better pics up later.

gpd005
02-16-2011, 06:36 AM
Overall I am very happy with the way this bike turned out!

gpd005
02-16-2011, 06:45 AM
I will have number plates on it i'm just not good enough with the graphics to install them, so it will be later. I'm sure more pics will show up from the dealer show and I'll get a few more up here too, but it's never gonna look this good again! We leave for Florida in two weeks to start Round 1 of the GNCC series, if you are ever able to make it to a GNCC DO IT! They are the big daddy of every XC series in the United States and are just awesome to watch or actually race in. I've met some of the most friendly people in my life at races all over the east coast. If you come to one look me up in the Sport class i'd be glad to meet ya and ask any questions you have about the bike there are no secrets here! I had a lot of people help me out on this build and I really appreciate everyone's help! Hiper Wheels, GBC Tires, GT Thunder, Maier Plastics, Big Gun Exhaust, Precision, 834 Powder Coating, Demaree Motorsports, Rath Racing, HyghOctane Graphics, Powermadd, DP Brakes, WKC Powersports,my wife, Brent Marshall, and all my boys on S.I.C.C. That is also a GT Thunder skid plate that is made for that link, you don't have to cut the skid and it offers the most ground clearance that you can get with the stock rotor.

One of the few I like that is 2 tone.

I think I like it because I DON'T like the way they 2 tone them from the factory.

It is Hiper's Pro-fill system. I guess you could say it's competition for Tireballs. Those particular ones are for the UTV tires.

Good job

28th & 25th overall in the AM...

That is pretty darn good in my opinion.

Especially on a 400EX. I guess it goes to show several things... a good rider on a good setup where he can be comfortable, well paced and smooth can be fast on a 400 too... and that 450's have more power, acceleration and stuff, but most people can only use so much power out there in the woods... and sometimes a lot of power makes you fast for a while but wears you down faster physically too.

Thanks for the Props and I agree 100%. Heck go check out Marshall Goings results. He runs the Schoolboy A/B class on a 300ex and he is putting it to a lot more 450's than I am! You don't have to have a ton of power, you have to be able to control it and put the power to the ground. The bike did awesome the first two rounds and I expect nothing less for the rest of the year.

Nice build. PS do you have the stock fenders and headlight? I'm looking to put them on my Wifes 01 400ex. I know I'll need the gas tank and such, but am having a hard time finding a deal on the plastics.

The one I took was getting very close to the start so I just snapped the pic and went on... I never approach anyone when the time is close.

This one was taken down on the beach by the creek... there where you came down by the creek before you did the switchback through the mudhole and came out in the field there with all the campers lined up on the right side of the track.

Our team pitted there on that beach sand that would have been to your left in this pic...

Its very cool that you are running a 400x. I agree with everyone that its talent that matters not the wheeler. I race a 400ex/x here in MN. Are you gonna be up this way at anytime? Got a few questions for ya on the 400x. What size is it ? Stock or bigger? And is the Big Gun exhaust a good one? Any cool motors you did to it? I own 3 400ex's thats why for the questions. 2 of my 400ex's are trail use only but 1 is as racer but its mostly stock.

I had kinda forgotten about this thread so i'm glad someone pulled it back up. To update everyone after winning the Unadilla GNCC I have locked up the 2011 GNCC Sport class Championship. That was the goal at the start of the season and I got it done. I should still be at the remaining GNCC's but just to really have a good time!!!!

As for the questions Chris, in my class you can not do anything with displacement, so I am still running the stock piston. I can really tell it's down on power now and i need to freshen it up but just haven't gotten around to doing that yet. I did have some head work done and that really opens these things up and makes them scream. I did the Sparks timing key advance, and I switched over to a full HMF system rather than the Big Gun. HMF has sponsored me for several years and I really like their product. The Big Gun was nice, i just like to support the company's who have stood behind me for the past few years of racing. You really can't beat this quad for what it is, so i would tell anyone not to be worried about lining up next to a 450 in the woods. You can make these things handle really well and they you will have no trouble keeping up. In the woods it's all about the ride and making it handle good, the power is there, you just have to put it to the ground.

Thats very good on winning the championship. So you had head work done , Sparks key advance, and HMF full exhaust. What is a Sparks key advance? I thought about doing the HMF on my race 400ex.

:D

I never said i was done with it, we have a date for the Ironman!!!!!:D

The sparks key mod is simply a way of advancing the timing and it makes the power of a STOCK bore motor a little snappier (is that even a word) It just revs a little quicker. It's like $20 from Sparks and comes with the flywheel puller needed so all you have to order is a gasket and your good to go.

would you perfer the sparks key over a hi comp piston? i read on sparks web site you can't touch the piston with the key but you can do anything with the head. i plan on having head work and a cam put in mine for next year but didn't know if the sparks key would be just as good as a hi comp piston or if i should just buy a hi comp piston.

my opinion is I would stay away from the higher compression pistons, they only generate more heat and I have my doubts than an average rider will tell a difference but that's just my $.02

GPD, congrats on the championship!

I have always and still do, prefer the 400EX handling over the 450R when both are set up correctly. The 450 is a different machine, but I always really liked the way the 400EX flew threw the air and handled better.

As for compression, I loved a simple 11:1 piston in my 400's matched with a stage 1 cam. It had gobs of bottom end power, and I still ran 87 octane on that motor with a cometic thin head gasket too. Never once pinged. Just remember the advertised compression ratios for the 400ex are usually off, since they were made for the XR400, and for some reason the 400ex piston sits .040" down in the hole at TDC anyways.

I got to bump this build up, this is my favorite build on this forum!! u did an awsome job, one question though What did u do with the subframe, exhaust, and airbox since u installed the GTT XC Link? im gonna instal one and since we have the same quad i was wondering wat u did to yours

Thanks for the props on the quad. She is gone now to another owner who is still racing it and enjoying it.

As for the question about the link, exhaust, and airbox. I made a custom riser kit for the air box and lifed it about an inch and a half. I used a large washer to space out the exhaust so it wouldn't hit the rear caliper. On the subframe i didn't have any problems with it other that it would rub on my sprocket guard. I ended up spacing it out a little bit but it always rubbed. On the build for this year we are looking at doing an inner guard rather than an outter in hopes to avoid the rubbing. I'll keep you posted on how this works out. Don't let these little things keep you away from the link though. That is one of if not the best mods that can be done to this quad and makes it ride a TON better than the stock set up.

the rubbing on the sub frame can be fixed easy if you have like a 6 foot long piece of steel pipe, or just something like that to use as a giant pry bar. and an extra person helps to hold dont the bike. Take the battery off and stick the long pipe down and in between the subframe rails and pry the lower sub frame rail out away from the chain/sprocket. it doesnt take much and you can just unbolt the shock linkage and lower the bike all the way down to check for clearance on everything.

Oh i'm by no means working it to it's full capabilities. Keep an eye out on the GNCC Sport Class in 2012, i know of a few guys who are running this that will really show what a 400 can do!

Thanks Dustin, I was really hoping for top ten overall but it didn't work out this year. Next year I expect to see a 400ex on the podium a few times and several times in the top ten. These young kids that are coming up are super fast.

Are those +2's? If so how hard is it in the trails and at the races to ride well?

gpd005
01-05-2012, 02:01 PM
They are +2's and i ran 4:1 wheels and had no troubles. It is just a hair wider than i would really like but at the GNCC's there are very few places where it made me slow down. At a few locals it got tight, but most places this is an ideal set up.

Hey Garon, just wanted to let you know good job at the banquet the other night!

in response to the last few posts--

No i won't be back in the sport class this year. A couple of my teamates will be there though on Team SICC race bikes and i know of a few other people planning on being in that class so it will be a good year i'm sure. I'm retired.

No clue on the chamber honestly. I set it and never had to mess with it again until i hit a tree mid-way thru the season.

And Thank You on the banquet props, IXCR is moving in the right direction and big things are happening there so it is great to be involved!

I run -3 dregrees on mine.

So Garon, your not racing anything this year?

gpd005
01-30-2012, 07:14 AM
Oh i'll still be at the track, helping out with the IXCR series and racing Vet B on my Kawi 450f dirtbike. But i'm gonna be done with quads for awhile. I'll still be out there pointing out the good lines to the quad guys though!

Wow, I'm surprised you're not going to be racing a 400EX again.

But then I guess you took what you came out for....

Figured you might take it on to another class and run with 450's.
