I believe you have to be 16 to race a 400. The only thing that is really mandatory is a working killswitch and helmet. But of course you will want to wear boots, chest protector, goggles, etc. Don't worry about numbers on your quad. They will provide you with a sticker that goes on the side of your helmet, and a transponder for scoring.

If you got the money Id get 450 carb/intake from Ex400,new airfilter, and pipe to start ! then maybe high comp.pistons/cams /bigbore kit. but if you just want to race and dont have the money for the upgrades you can at least get nerfs/tether swicth.and riding gear .And just race!

You want to get your quad to the point it will even survive the 2+ hours of racing (good tires, skids, etc). After that, suspension is the #1 thing you should consider if you try racing, and enjoy it. All the motor work in the world won't help, if you are bouncing uncontrollably off trees, ruts, and roots. Until you are still bouncing off the rev limiter as you are pulling into the scoring tent on the last lap, motor work is pointless. An exhaust would be the only thing I recommend. And that's so that you can hear your motor over the other racers.

Suspension x10. Laz at GTThunder works wonders with stock z400 shocks+his linkage.
