i have a 2001 400ex and need to know how to check if the valves need to be adjusted because mines having trouble at idle and i have had the carb done already so the next step is the valves

1. Remove plastics, gas tank, engine overtray.

2. After removing all of that, you will see the four caps on the head cover, the two towards the back of the quad are the intake valves, the two towards the front are exhaust valves. Also make sure to set the motor to TDC.


3. Remove those caps and you will see the rocker arm and sub rocker arms, have a pre-bent set of feeler guages ready to stick between there. Loosen the nut on top of the arms and turn the screw to adjust.

4. Now I could be wrong on this, but measure the exhaust valves at .004, and intake valves at .005 (may wanna confirm that). Im pretty sure thats stock settings, those will do unless you have an aftermarket cam.

5. Make sure to adjust them so that there is SLIGHT drag between the arms, not too tight, not too loose.

6. Reinstall caps, engine overtray, gas tank, plastics and your done!
