this is for the XC racers.

GNCC is coming up and i need to get in shape. What do ou recomend to build my endurance? I know running and riding are good, but any others? Also, what about pills ( from a healt store ) Are there any that would help?

well im currnetley training and i am on that protien powder stuff. but its the expensive one with the acids and vitamins to help recover too. you should take this stuff and do a good upper body training program. you could also get some help at your local gym! thats what i did and ts working great

don't drink pop, lay off junk food, try to exercise a little and drink lots of water and that should help a ton in its self. Then before the race and between races eat something, and you might want to look up carb loading also. Oh and don't forget to take a few asprin before a race to thin your blood so it makes it easier for the ol' ticker to pump the blood. Also I know a lot of people have a tendancy to adjust their shocks way stiffer than they need to which translates into a harder ride which means you will wear down quicker. lol I hope I made sence, I don't feel like rereading it.

running is nt all it tho... XC racing is really demanding to your upper body muscles. your cardio doesnt really need to be that great. running would help that. you need to get your arms built and used to that extra stress put on them. drinking water before your races will help with thinning your blood and reducing arm pump but the key is a good workout

Upper body stamina is the key...lots of water before the race..days before the race..no carbonated drinks for a few days and just mildly work your bodies upper muscles but you dont' wanna swell up like hulk hogan. Stay loose, relax, have fun, and remember your there to have a good time,,,keep those thoughts in your mind and you'll be OK.

My first XC race was a GNCC race at the Ironman,,which is considered one of the toughtest races in the GNCC..I hadn't rode for 5 weeks when I went to this race...I finished and was as tired as you can get,,but I did all the things I mentioned above and it was lots of fun...

It took me 2 hours and 13 minutes to finish the Ironman..yes they are long races and if you think your a top notch ATV rider/racer and have never raced a XC race..your probably not NEAR as good as you think...:D There's no better feeling than racing and gettin arm pump so bad you can't feel your hands to give it gas, pull a clutch, or pull the front brake in a race after 30 minutes of riding and you still have an hour and a half left to race.. XC separates the men from the boys for damn sure... I say this from expereince and look forward to the challenges of GNCC racing for the 2003 season.;) I"m not in it to win a trophy every race but I'm gonna have more fun and enjoy racing ATV's to it's fullest...:)

Simply lots of water and just riding. There is nothing complicated about that. Do that for a while and you can ride 2 hours straight and feel as fresh at the end as at the begining.

Nothing will give you the proper excerise/muscle training that riding can provide. Therefore riding as much as possible is the key. I do however recommend a weight program as well. For endurance purposes it is best to stay away from the low rep/high weight work outs and go for the endurance lifts. 25 reps/per set at a lower weight will do a lot more good than 5 reps/per set with heavier weight.

Your standard bench press, dumb bell flys, incline bench, tricep extensions, bicep curls, along with wrist curls should lean you out and get you going.

The best way to get in shape for riding is lifting weights along with a healthy diet. When you work out your upperbody( curls, benchpress, rows, lat pulldown, tricept press) try not to focus on heavy weight training. Do 3 sets of 8 with moderate weight and on your last set lessen the weight and burn out until you cannot lift anymore on each exercise. Its very strenouse but it works, trust me I am a high school wrestler and 8 weeks of this had me feeling like an iron man on the track. Riding hard motos and even during all day long hard trail rides, no arm pump or fatigue. You have to focus on your legs too, just squats or leg presses target most of the major muscles of the leg. Before a race eat a banana or 2 for breakfast and drink plenty water. Water is Key! On a hot summer day have you ever noticed how drenched you are after a moto? Do this for 5-8 weeks, 3 days a week and I promise you will see and feel the results. For my forearms I just use one of those grip exercise things during my spare time when I'm around the house and that does the trick. Drink a protein shake or eat plenty eggs and chicken after workouts too.

I iceskate for 1.5 hour everynight. Its realy seems to be helping my endourance. Ive gone from doing 125 laps 2 weeks ago when i started training to doing 175 last night and im a lot less tired afterwards now. and ive always done 50 situps and 50 pushups every day. Now i just have to learn how to ride before the first race of the season.

last year was my first year of xc and i have the speed to run up front in my class, but was lacking in the body area. last lap, i was dead. i never stopped unless i had a problem , but this year i joined my local gym. i do stationary bike 4-5 days /week and upperbody 3 days and abs almost everyday. i've lost almost 10lb and feel stronger. i am still recovering from a broken leg so i am limited to what i can do. i did a ton of ridding last year, but it was very expensive. your quad will take a beating if you don't have a practice bike. jmo
