I have a pair of ITP holeshot rear tires not being used so I was planning on studding them.

However, I heard there may be a higher risk of ripping studs out with that style tire because it is a softer compound, i.e. compared to a chueng shin for ice riding.

My question is will I have a problem if I put 1/2" studs in the holeshots? Not racing, so I don't care to be 'legal' per say, just to be playing on some frozen lakes. Thanks!

Any tire you choose will eventually lose studs. Cheng shins are cheap, are harder compound, and have more studing locations.

The hole shots should be ok for rec riding. The knobs might crack and tear if they are too soft.

With 1/2" studs you might still be poking thru the carcass. Most racers will use 1" length for less tear out.

Poking thru the carcass shouldn't matter tho right? Assuming all the studs are in I would think it wouldn't lose air.

I suppose I'll give it a shot and just keep making sure the studs aren't backing out after every ride
