C Clamp ???

hey i am gonna be changing my rear brake pads and in the clymer manual i notice they use a c clamp but they don't mention it... are there different size c clamps, if so whats the best size and are they neccasary when changing the rear brakes thanks

No a c-clamp is not needed, it makes it easier though. I would go into more detail, but I hate typing.

Its just used to hold the pistons in, so you can put the pads on and then slip it back over the disk. I don't know what size you would need, since I have never done it on my 400, but if you look at the calipier it has to be small enough to fit in there to hold the pistons back.

A BIG PAIR OF CHANNEL LOCKS DO THE SAME THING. THEY USE THE CLAMP TO PUSH THE PISTON BACK IN TO THE CALIPER.

I'd recommend loosening the brake fluid resevoir to vent so you don't build up too much pressure in the line and blow the seal out of your caliper pushing it back in.

You just need to push the piston back in, it should hold itself there while you assemble the pads and get the disc back in.

Just one of those things I am anal about I guess.
Also anyone who changes pads on an ABS vehicle you should open the bleeders and let the extra fluid come out there when pushing the pistons back in, instead of forcing it backwards into the ABS unit.
Had to learn that one from experience.

these work the best imo. the only thing i will use on brakes. you dont have to clamp and un clamp....

yes definitly undo the fluid resevior. Other wise you will be rebuilding the brake caliper, i had to not that hard but a pain. So just undo the cover then puch the piston back slowly

Also, if you still have the parking brake and have kept it adjusted, loosen it 2 or 3 turns.

channel lock or slip joint pliers work as well
