advanced timing question???

im getting ready build my motor and am thinking im going to get a esr 330 pv cylinder but my questions r..... first off how much exactly will a advanced timing plate help? and will it have any effect on port work as in sholud i tell esr before they send my cylinder so they can make adjustments??

Ignition timming shouldnt make any difference in which cylinder porting you get.

You set the ignition timming, in degrees of advance, so the engine performs its best.
You wouldnt want to advance the timming more than 5* to 8* degrees on a gas carb engine.

ok can u explain how exactly it works then and how does it help performance?? also how would i kno how much to advance for best performance? is it diff w all motors? im in the dark on this one
