View Full Version : Tranny clunk when I lock the rear brakes

Hey guys I was out playing in the snow today and I noticed something.

If i'm already rolling and I pull in the clutch and lock the rear brakes I get this slight clunk sound from the tranny. I tried adjusting the clutch cable to the point where there is like no free play but it doesn't seem to change the clunk.

If I ease into the rear brake it doesn't make the sound. But if I abruptly bring things to a stop by locking the rear with the clutch pulled, I can hear it.

What do you think?

I'm thinking if your tranny was clunking you wouldn't be driving this long....so I'm guessing it isn't your tranny, it could be your swingarm needle bearings are bad an the clunk is the swingarm against the pivot bolt. At least if you think thats the area around your tranny you believe its coming from...

Swingarm bearings are brand new, I don't think they are the culprit. If I have it up on the atv lift/stand with the wheels rolling I can reproduce the same symptom.

Thanks for the replies guys, and welcome to the site cja1990 :)

I was thinking the same thing, because I was looking at the countershaft sprocket and chain while I was doing it. The noise seemed to be coming from that exact area.

I was going to get a video of it on the atv lift to confirm it.

That makes me feel a lot better, thanks.

No big deal mine does the same thing, my dads grizzly used to do it like crazy when you'd lock the rear wheels up.

if you get the clutch in all the way you shouldn't have that noise. i lock mine up all the time and it doesn't do that, especially lately in the snow and muddy stuff i've been locking my rears all the way down the hill haha.

Mine does it to. It's done it ever since it was new. It sometimes sounds like a clunk or it will sound kind of like chattering or sound like gears stripping. I think most of it is just the chain slapping the chain guides. My buddy's 400 makes the same exact sound.

I appreciate the input guys, thanks :)

I'll try to get a vid of it on the lift soon when I can.
