I was wondering what it worth, how you guys would pay for a brand new 88 engine?

I'd give $2000

I don't think that is valid question because it doesn't matter.

At this stage of the game it is what the seller wants to sell it for and what a buyer wants to buy it for. Worth has nothing to do with it.

Again at this stage in the game, it is an elaborate display of market economics. Many times this is demonstrated on ebay and craigslist.

i recently talked to a guy via craigslist who had an original 87 that has never been started. it was supposably used on display at a school. he was a tough negotiator so im still waiting on him to come down...unless he found a buyer.

You guys are messing with my attempt to draw redred out and get him to try to work a deal with me on that one. Or maybe I'll just buy it and keep the stand and trash the motor......NOT!
But in all seriousness I would love to have it and it would never get started and would spend the rest of my life in my trophy room. But don't have that kind of coin.

How about this? What would you pay for all original 1986 vin# 000250 Never had as much as the head pulled off and runs like new? I'm real close with the owner.

It's already sitting in my garage. No negotiating was needed, his price was low enough already. I drove from Youngstown to the North Hills (just behind the Ross Park mall) Sunday morning to pick it up. Just to clear things up, it is an 85 ATC motor.

If this is the one on eBay, I'd ask a few questions about that motor. I saw two center case bolts with 10mm heads, which are not factory on any 250R motor I've seen, plus the gaskets are green, which seem to me like Honda replacements. I'm not sure Honda used those back in 88-89, but maybe somebody can confirm this. Also, some of the other center case bolts look nice and shiny, and others are discolored. Somethings don't seem to add up, maybe the seller can give you an honest answer as to why these things are like this.

ok. he said it was an 87 trx. anyways, he wanted $400 on the spot and i only had $300 to spend. iwasnt going to borrow money a week before christmas and he sure wasnt taking credit. i called him yesterday to see if he still had it and he said he sold it. $500. still a good deal.

So you could of had a brand new 250r motor no matter what year and didn't jump on a 400 dollar deal, you will regrete not begging, borrowing or stealing that $100 you were short.

I sold a half dozen brand new 86 250r motors for 1500-2000

whats up w/ this 88 nos 250r motor? The center cases are correct, green gaskets?, different type and shiney-ness of nuts/bolts, 89 stator, allen head screw on the cylinder- where it should be a 10mm like drain plug, non-stock bolt holding clutch cable holder on, grey water pump cover and looks like a used exhaust pipe flange. I wouldn't give much for it, it looks like an attempt to use your spare parts and try to get a ridiculous amount of money for it.

You noticed even more than I did. I did see the flange though. Looks like a bunch of BS to me. I think its just a clean rebuild, possibly with a new set of NOS cases. The gaskets seem to be a dead giveaway.

I had to jump on it at $500. I tried to negotiate with the owner when I called last Saturday night, but he told me he was firm on the price. I told him that was fine and I'd see him in the morning. :D It even came with a new 85 carb, radiators and a kicker and shifter.

The NOS motor sold. So I guess its worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it.

Well I guess you guys caught me. Here's how I did it....I took an 85 atc motor and went to my local hardware store and got the best rattle can I could buy and repainted the old cases. Then the same with the head. Then I filled the crankcase up with sand to make the motor feel heavy enough so when I sold it to the buyer he would think there was actually gears in the lower half. If I remember correctly, I think I also put a gear or two out of my craftsman 8hp lawn mower in it. Then JB welded the countershaft and sprocket on the case. If you need tips on doing your own please let me know. I have 400+ feedback on Ebay so I really know how to scam people in thinking I have real nice stuff!!........................................... .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .........................Or maybe I purchased it directly from a Honda dealer and that's how it came from Honda.......you decide!!thanks!!

Maybe I would have asked that dealer a couple questions about it. Nothing personal here man, but you've had more than one person call attention to the discrepancies, and there are plenty of people getting burned by making internet purchases every day. I just had it happen to me this week. A Honda dealer in Georgia had a new HRC kit on ebay that I needed for an engine build for a customer. The dealer claimed it was opened and that the end cap was used for a short period of time, but everything else in the kit was still brand new. I even called to verify this. Now imagine my surprise when the kit arrives and I find a Hot Cam taped up in the OEM bag.

Deathman and myself are calling attention to the issues with your motor to prevent this exact thing from happening to somebody else. Personally, I think the dealer you bought that from pulled one over on you, because from everything I've ever seen, Honda does not do the stuff we pointed out.

also I didn't think about, until I looked at my NOS 85 motor, it has a sticker on the clutch cover w/ some codes on it. I'm guessing this means origin of where it came from and production date? The sticker is half readable and I can't make out all the numbers, but it does say atc250r.

I hear what you guys are saying and appreciate your concerns for people getting screwed in this day and age. I had the same questions about it when I got it also. You have to remember, 99% of the NOS 85-86 motors were pulled out of the ATC's and that's how we ended up with them. I still have a few and so do you guys. These were not a direct order from your local Honda shop but pulled when the machines were banned. These motors sometimes had stickers on the flywheel covers. That's why these were so abundant. I mean, how many 88-89 motors have you seen for sale? Me? None besides this one. Sorry to back track but the pics where bad by the exhaust flange and you could not see it was covered with clear tape from the factory and gave the illusion of a used part. Also, I have a few nos clutch covers and oddly enough, the powder coating is different between the two-both in factory boxes.(the clutch cover on this motor seems glossy compared the the center cases) I've been messing with 250r's for the better part of 20 years and this is the first 88 new motor I've seen for sale. I ended up selling this and many other nos parts to a 7 year member on this site who is welcome to get his money back if he is not happy at all with his purchase.

I don't have any info on this motor, but I know Pete's a standup guy and wouldn't just hock a rebuilt motor as new.

But take this into consideration for some of the discrepencies: Service honda used to sell 88 kit motors, they were all OEM parts from an 88 for $3000 and you could get them to assemble it or you could yourself.

I wanted so bad to buy one or two when they were available, but didn't have the cash back then. There should be a few of these around from people that had the foresight and cash to sit on it.
The only difference is that it didn't come from honda built, but it would still be a NOS engine.

She's a beauty! Great for restoration project. You get up to $2000 for these?
I need to send you a motor stand. That motor should be off the shelf so it does not get scratched .

rsss396
12-26-2010, 11:33 AM
Unfortunately they had the scratches when I bought them.

The way stuff was cut they kinda got treated like a red headed step child when they were removed.

I keep it on a soft pad now so it doesn't get scratched but I really do dig your stands! I just don't really have any where to show them off.

All the motors I sold were identical to these and some did sell for 2000.00

Lot of people asking how much for the motor,

I want 1800 for the motor plus shipping

I will discount the motor 50.00 if payed with a cashier check
