I bought a 2000 Walsh narrow frame CR500 link 250R, and this winter it is going to get a full rebuild. I already built my '89 up as a duner, so this one is going to be geared towards fast trail riding, but I might hit up the MX track or dunes with it occasionally as well. I am going to collect parts over the next few months, and then put it together when I have everything, so depending on what parts I can find and how my funds look, it should be done in late spring.

I've posted it before, but here is a picture of what I have to start with. Not too pretty, but everything is there.

Here's a couple of parts I have bought so far...It is going to have a blue/chrome/black/white theme to it. The motor will be based off an ESR 265PV, aluminum bore with nikasil plating.

This afternoon I started playing around with some graphics. I am thinking they will go on some white plastics, either Fullbores or Lakers probably. It is a start, but I am not sure if it is enough. However, I am a big fan of clean looking bikes, so I don't want it to look too busy. The Walsh "W" will go on each side of the rear fenders. Let me know what you think, please post opinions and ideas!

Are you using GIMP to do your graphics design? I might play around with a design for ya just for shyt's and giggles. Its fun to mess with... LOL!

I like where you're going with this btw! Love the clean look myself.

Troy, I am just using photoshop CS2 for the graphics. I know i didn't really follow the template... at all... but it is a good reference for size. I could email you the photoshop file if you wanted. Thanks again for the help with the templates and stuff!

I can't wait for this one! Looks like you have a very nice quad to start from. I kicked around the idea of buying this from Jody. Good luck on the build. Your other quad turned out very nice.

Troy, now that is pretty freaking sweet! I have to try out your GIMP software! I'm not sure I want to go with a full graphics set like that though...we will see... maybe if you get yours done first I'll change my mind ;) ... I would like to see how well these fit. Anyway, one of these days I will give it another try with some of your ideas. I really like the tiled "W's"

Sending you a PM too with a couple other questions.

Yeppers.. The templates are actually pretty close. I had another set made for my XC bike awhile back that I ended up ditching, but they fit pretty good. Not perfect but 99%. Yea, I'm doing something similar for my Elsinore graphics so it was pretty easy to do with the tiled/plaid look, since I was already on that train of thought... LOL. I was able to copy the Walsh logos exactly, found a new trick that I learned and works pretty good.

I remember seeing those ones you had made, I like your '89 how it is much better. But you have stock/maier fenders on that bike right? Did you ever think about the radiator cap hole on the Fullbores? I'm going to keep that in mind and design around it the best I can I guess.

Speaking of graphics..... (Troybilt)
I am currently rebuilding a Full Laeger Hybrid and need graphic help.
Will have Black Fullbore plastics and a Clarke Black 4 gallon tank. Color scheme is Candy Orange and Gloss Black.
Any recommendations would be appreciated!
Thanks,
Doc

You're right you need to cut around that hole. I don't know of any templates specifically for the Fullbore plastic.

Ok, small update. I have been working on getting all my motor stuff together- cases are at powdercoat, bearings and piston on the way soon, and I'm sending my tranny out for cryo treatment next week. Then I should have everything to put it together.

I PC'd my Hinson cover chrome w/ clear top coat. Not super shiny, but I think it will be easier to maintain than polished aluminum when riding through mud. Couple other billet parts came too.

Looks good Marc, I just send one of my covers to the powder coaters yesterday. That powder should hold up nicely.

Where are you sending you're gears? I would like to do the same. Do you know anything about the cryo process? I've got access to cryo freezers and liquid nitrogen here at work... :-) ...fun stuff, and dangerous.

I think I'm going to send my whole tranny- (gears, shafts, forks, drum) to NitroFreeze in New England. I talked with someone there and he seemed really helpful and I thought the price was right, $65 for everything. And he said if they receive your parts by the Friday in any given week, they will have them shipped by the following Tuesday.

Their website explains the process and benefits quite well-

I was also going to say I'm really impressed with Magnum Powder coating here in Grand Rapids, MI. Dtowndiesel has been using them for years and he said I should try them, so last year I had my '89 frame done in Red Barron, 2 coats, for $125. I just got a quote yesterday on my Walsh frame in a candy blue, which is a 3-4 coat process....$165. Can't beat that.

I love magnum, great work I agree. Hey Marc, when are we going to pull that thing apart? Tomorrow night would be a great night, you better hurry up and get your ice time in, I'm ready for a tear down. :D

Give me a month and a half Jon. I just ordered my studs!

We could still drink some beer tomorrow night, tear down or not- let me know.

Got out on the lake yesterday, no studs yet. It was a blast though, 6th gear pinned. Next week we are hoping to plow a track and do a little racing!

Hey Marc, what are you planning to do for skid plates if you are gonna ride these on trails ?

Not quite sure yet, probably going to fab up a plate for under the frame/engine, but I don't think I will run a swingarm skid.... most all the trails we ride are wide open sandy trails, so it's not likely I will run into trouble.

Engine Cases back from PC today, gloss black, they look awesome! I threw together the cases and cylinder to get an idea what it will look like. Here's a couple pics-

Notice there's no ignition cover...yet...I need an old style blue one so it matches! I'll make you a really nice deal on one if you have one!!!

Bought some Douglas Shamrock Beadlocks off ebay a couple weeks ago, had them powdercoated satin black. Looks awesome-

http://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd408/silverlake250r/douglasshamrock.jpg?t=1295463376

Also picked up some brand new Holeshot MXR's 19 inch rear, 20 inch front to go on the rims. Should be a good a good set of tires, and I only have about 500 bucks in them including rims, tires, and PC.

I was going to get some Hipers for this build... decided my money is better spent elsewhere ;)

I am glad to hear of a good powder coater with those prices in grand rapids. I think am going to try them on my next build up. I will pm you soon about them...

Nice quad by the way!

Some Updates-

Bought a LRD pipe for it, not sure if I am going to run the silencer yet, I am interested in Dave Moore's legalizer, plus I would have to mod it for a spark arrestor. Can't beat 225 shipped for brand new show chrome though!

http://a4.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/180116_595864904944_15305732_33957928_2669049_n.jp g

Other than that, I still have to get some motor parts, white Fullbores are on the way, and a custom hood is being made. I'd say I still need about 3k more in parts, so this may be pushed back into June or July, trying to save some money for a house at some point.

Lookin Good!! :D

You could always sell the silencer to OutlawATV4, he has a post a few down from this one asking for a LRD silencer.

I'm just now seeing this post and HOLY CRAP!! :eek2: I like your work dude!! Do you do graphics for people or is this just a one time deal? I was just talking to josborn in his re-build thread about graphics and these look like something I might want when I get around to doing a rebuild on my Walsh YZ. I've got a very close friend that can do the actual design work, but I don't even know where to find a template for 250R graphics.

Ok, It got really warm and the ice melted, so no more ice racing. Since I can't ride her anymore, I decided to strip her naked.
