I've been looking at getting compact tractor and came across a 4210 with a Yanmar 3cyl diesel with just over 1000 hrs on it. I know the 1000 isnt much but my question is at what point (hrs wise) does the motor need to be refreshed?

I have a small Kubota that is 25+ years old with a 3 cylinder diesel and it has so many hours on it that the hour meter quit working years ago. It has thousands of hours on it and it still runs great. If you suspect something is wrong with it, then pass it up. but if you are serious about getting it, then do a compression test on it to be sure.

I appreciate your response, I have started the tractor ect.... and it seems fine. I just cant get any info on the yanmars hours refresh time. I know they can last forever if ya take care of them but I always do a little homework first :) I'm a little weird when it comes to this stuff.

I do know that when I was looking at small tractors, I looked at all the name brands and found Kubota’s to be better and stronger in the material it was made from. The Kubota was much heaver built then all the others. But that may have changed on the newer models. I do no that the diesel will be much more fuel efficient then a gas tractor.

The yanmars are great motors. If you care for it you should see at least 5000 hours. Yanmars are an extremely popular motor, I would not hesitate to buy one

Most tractor motors anyways what's in jd tractors are supposed to be rebuilt at 10-13k hrs that's the way it is on our 4230 3020 and our old 7520.

Unless your using the compact every day like a commercial or nursery customer may, you are not going to have to worry about an engine overhaul. We have ALOT of these things out there and have Never had an issue where an overhaul was needed. Only run plus 50-2 and low vis hygard(assuming your going with a hydro) oils with Deere filters and you are good to go!

I have a John Deere 955 compact utility tractor. Never had any motor problems. Hour meter has long broken. Only problems I ever have with it is hydrolic lines breaking and leaks. Just change the fluids regularly. Everything else will go before the motor.
