Hey guys, just finished up my high comp 416 build with stg 2 hot cam. I was breaking in the cam by riding around the yard in 1st gear so as to keep the rpm more than 3000 and verying the rpm. noticed my headers were glowing. after 10-15 mins I was pretty cold buy the motor was pretty warm. pulled the plug she is chalky white. I'm wondering though how is it lean if I wasn't even in the main jet circuit. Carb is stock with 155 main. Any ideas? I"m gonna go have some big boy pops and say some prayers. Really hope I didn't ruin a 200 dollar piston. later

whats the rest of your jetting? I go my moto mans method of breaking in. 3-5 sets though or until i feel it is good to go. jetting rich would be much better than too lean, riding in first gear probably isnt the best idea... i would recommend something around a 165-175 main with a 42 pilot starting out depending on the setup. steve

Let it warm up for about 15 mins, then take it out and pull it hard in 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th gear. Each time in each gear you hit it for a bit then let it decel on its own, then hit it and so on.

Thanks for the help. 155 main, 38 slow jet, clip is 3rd from top. I figure cam break in is most important and the hot cams instructions say to keep rpm about 3000 for 20 min. with light engine load. So I figured a a 1st gear ride in the yard would fit all those requirements.

Everyone has their opinion about breaking in motors. I personally run it through one heat cycle, just to make sure everything is ok, and then ride it like I normally ride. I've broken in some motors at the races.

never an issue like this- start up and warm up for 5-10 minutes then let it cool off - go out and slam some gears for 10 minutes or so cool off - and then its off to bouncing off the rev limiter
