I mean who makes good studs,
how many do we need,
and how/where do they go in the tires?

i went to ice racing once in a hockey ring. They had dirtbikes, atv and gogarts. they simply had hex head srews that were really short maybe 1/4 in. and they put them on there tires in the metty parts of the thread so they didn't pop the tires and it worked well for them they was a rare spin out but they held well.

if i remember they all had a total of 50 screws they could place them as they want

we used to use 1/2" dry wall screws, seemed to work ok for our purposes. most didnt pull out unless you spun them on a road or something. it is a cheap alternative... but they wont last if you ride sand or roads at all! they are great for just ice though. steve

I had 3/8" studs last year and they were coming right out after a couple laps on the track we made.. the fronts were ok, but I couldnt keep any in the rears

1/2" studs work the best. Make sure you are studding tires with a good amount of tread on them. That way if you lose a screw or decide to change the screw pattern you wont get a flat.

We just play ride/race here... so it was cheaper to spend $15 on a few pounds of 1/2" hex head/slotted sheetmetal screws vs $150+? for actuall Kutters, Golds,etc. Ride wheelies on the ice! The tires are original oem 1987 lt250. Only lose about 5 or 6 screws a year!

Another question:
To avoid the screws coming out would it
be better to get long ones and run them right through
the tire and then use Slime sealant?
We will only use this set of tires for the ice so the screws
will not have to come out.

Here is a real ice racing rear tire. This tire is a cheng shin 18 in tires, studded for the right side. It is a TT tire, hence the braking screws along the edges. this one is made with kold kutter ice screws. 1" long, all the way thru the tire. No sealant needed to hold air. these tires are never run on anything but ice. they have moose wraps on them before they are trailored. Around here a local pro builds them for $220 a set.

Here is a real ice racing front tire. It is a 21-7-10 Kenda front max. I prefer to cut the top of each lug off so the studs sit flush with the top of the lug. These are 1' long Pro Gold ice screws. They go all the way thru. I do not run any sealant in the tires. they will hold up to 10psi all day. Every 3 years or so they will start to loose screws, then I build a new set. Before each day of racing, i index the screws and make sure none are backing out.
