recon RS shifting problem

i have a 01 recon es.. the onther day my ferind was out using and it stoped shifting.. the 1st gear light was flashing like if i had a low battery (it was fully charged) but if i quickly filped it off and on with out lettin the engine stall and quckly pushed the shift botton it ould shift once or twice then it stoped workin again... if i hit the shift motor with a rench it would work fine for a good 5 min..
could this be a bad motor or sencor... or wireing...

any input will be helpfull...
