So I'm looking at this truck. Its an old forestry truck from Texas. The truck seems to be in real nice shape no leaking oil or anything like that. Drives real nice and everything works just fine. the guy is asking $4000 for it. Here is the kicker. 300,000 miles eeeeks
what do you guys think??

If it still has the stock tranny and it hasn't been rebuilt I would say its going to go out before too long.

junk. IMO if your going for a 3/4ton truck there is no way to go other then diesel. yes might cost a little more but 300k miles on a gas v8 in a 3/4ton truck isnt going to be pretty. id say pass on the truck and save the money. because i imagine after 300k miles pretty soon its going to start haveing blowby and need to be freshened up

plus being a heavier truck and gas motor at that the fuel economy isnt going to be great either. and with 300k on the ticker isnt going to help fuel economy either.

if i was you id keep an eye on craigslist. its that time of year where people are hard up for money to pay personal property taxes, and buy xmas for familys. so cash is king if you have the cash you can probally get a killer deal on a nicer truck with less mileage

Nothing wrong with the gasser if you know its limitations:

1. The 5.4L 2v engines are actually really good. Had several of them in vans I used to drive and work on. Although they sound like crap when you first start them up cold (they get piston slap when cold but so does the chevy and the dodges it has to do with tolerances) a good motor oil and letting them warm up is key. Currently my old boss told me the E350 5.4L is still kicking with 300k, the bottom end we think has been shoddy for sometime but no issues otherwise and his son with a lead foot drives it. I drove 2 different E250s and the engines didnt die one had 280k when I quit and the other one had 220k.

Bad news is the plugs can blow out and it sucks to repair but its not that common unless you change the plugs and cross thread them. By now most mechanics can repair it rather cheaply. my cousin has an 05 thru his job and its still going at 420k

2. mpg sucks (figure about 12-14mpg or so in town and a bit better on the highway (depending on gears and your foot.

3. Power is ok with the right gears. Dont expect monsteer torque tho. The vans I mention CONSTANTLY had at least 2500lbs + in them and never had an issue-had plenty of balls but then again the diesel is always better.

4. Transmissions dont quite to easy. The F250/F350 has the 4R100 and so long as its been flushed every 20-50k it will be fine. Considering this was a forest truck Im sure it was serviced since they dont pay for them.

Otherwise the trucks are fine. Like I said I know the F series and E series inside and out and besides the spark plug failures due to people crossthreading or changing them (there is a procedure you warm it up and let it cool for 10-15 mins before you change them btw and they come out easy and you also torque them right and only use autolite, champion or motorcraft plugs) and the piston slap when cold they are fine.

300k is still alot of miles for 4 grand tho, I would offer 3k and see what they say and probably settle at 3200. You gotta take into account that although it was probably serviced regularly that at 300k the overall vehicle may be worn out. Things like rubber bushings, leaf springs, interior, ball joints, tie rods, etc, etc all wear out.

stupid cell phones. What I meant to say is Im going to pass on this truck. I'd end up working it to hard for something with that many miles. If its still on the lot in a month and I have not found anything else ill try to lowball him and get it for 3000. The thing blue books at 7000.

For what its worth I forgot to mention something important:

The vans I was talking about were worked SUPER hard every day pretty much nonstop 24/7 b/c they were roadside service trucks. The chevys/GMCs and dodges just couldnt keep up and always broke down the fords had barely any repairs.

But yea like I said before 300k is alot of miles, if it had 150-200k I would say he no problem but at 300k like I said other things than the drivetrain tend to be wearing out.

Not sure I would buy that. I would look for something else with less miles
