It has been in the mid 30's , mid 20's at night for a week or so here in my part of town.. The other night I went to go for a small blast, lord can't get over these 400's being such bastads to start... I even took the heater and blasted it on the case's for some time to warm it up.. Other wise it would have killed the battery.. Then again today, but I just said screw it, came in side LOL.. I have owned the bike since new in 2000, it has always been this way in the colder weather.. I even think more so now since I did the engine...

Do you pump the gas a little bit like 3 of 4 times before you start it?

Mine somewhat cold blooded. I pump the throttle like 3-4 times, put full choke on and start it. It will die then I do it again and it will run then I put on half choke and let it run for about 30 secs and take off. Turn choke off as I ride about a minute or less and it idles.

Otherwise I let it idle at half choke for a good minute and then take choke off.

40 pilot too lol..

when i had my 400 i removed the choke and it would always start fine in the dead of winter after pumping the throttle a few times..try a 42 pilot.

No. Can not do that with the 450 carb, as it has a accelerator pump on it, so will flood it super easy..

Just go up a size on your pilot and you should be fine.

I thought only the 06+ 450 carbs (fcr) had acc. pumps?

No sir they all do. The acc screw on the pre 06's is a phillips screw while the 06 up is a D shaped adj type screw..

the stock 38mm 400ex carb has a acc. pump on it....does it not?

Pretty sure it does hence why pumping the throttle makes starting without the choke possible. I have a 42 pilot choke removed and it takes a while but i can start in any temperature. I think my battery is getting weaker though.
