Sunday morning was one of the best days I have seen all year. It was crisp and the sunrise was incredible! I was in teh shop at 5 am sharpening saw blades and my plans were to cut atleast 100 bowl blanks to get stocked up before bad weather settles in.

I hadnt cut but maybe 5 when I dropped a pen and when I bent down to get it, I just kept going:p My back went out:( I laid there for awhile, then was able to crawl to the Ranger and get myself top the house. Ive been lucky, it hasnt gone out this bad in several years.

So with not being able to do a bunch, especially deer hunt:mad: I started working on finishing up afew bowls I have been working on.

Here is a White Oak Natural Edge that I finished up tonight. This would have usually taken an hour, but being hurt, ended up taking me 4 hours.

Thanks for lookin! Im about bored out of my mind not being able to do anything!

This free form bowl is made from a piece of 100 year old apple from Maine. The fellow gave me several pices to turn. It came from his grandfathers farm.

I turned it very thin, 1/8 or so and let it warp! The pictures dont show it completely but it is just a neat piece with tons of character. I wish I could see what that tree has seen!

My buddy called sunday evening and said he had something for me. I figured it was a deer. When he rolled up with his trailer i hobbled out there and man did he ever hook me up! He brought me a HUGE Maple burl!

Sucks to hear about your back. But i must say, you are a man of many talents. Many people are into a lot of hobbies, like myself, but are half arse at everything. Everything you do seems to be top notch. Great looking work!

Thank you. I guess when you want to do something you put your best effort into it and hopefully it shows. The wood turning is pretty fun and challenging espeically since i dont have anyone to show me the ropes, but its coming along.

Next up will be hollow forms....

Now you can finish workign on all of the wood you have cut. Im sure you have quite a bit to work on.

On another note. What would you charge for that first bowl? It would make a great gift for my mother.

Docta says i need a backiotomy!!!

Pappy

Steve, that bowl is $80 shipped with insurance

I will have several up for sale in the coming weeks, I just cant rush them as they need to be fully dried and the finish cured before i can send them out...although people keep coming here and buying them as soon as they are finished it seems:p

Im about to drop the coin on an articulated arm hollowing system that has a "Laser"...LOL sorry I love Austin powers ! The hollow forms are basically done for art but some can be made functional as a container of sorts.

how much for a wine bottle stopper?

Pappy
12-01-2010, 11:48 PM
They run $25 for domestic woods, $35 for most exotics. I use only the best stainless steel stoppers, no chrome plating, no plastic

Pappy you need to get something that can etch some designs in the wood. Make some BA trophies for the nationals or something like that. I wouldn't mind having a bowl with a quad on it as a centerpiece on a table lol.

Check out this clock my buddy derek cook had made. I would have ya make me something like this if you could do it!

I have a guy who will etch what ever I want into calls, bowls etc. I just havent had time to try it out

Well, I stopped taking muscle relaxers yesterday, they were helping but making me sick as well. I hit the sack at 8pm and woke up at 10 am....

This morning was horrible, I dont remember any of last night or talking to the family this morning. Woke up in alot of pain. A super hot shower and alot of stretching helped, and today I tried doing alot of light walking which seemed to help loosen things up. I even managed to get into my deer stand this evening so thats a plus! Bear season starts monday and I need to get some work done tomorrow so I can go!

I did manage to get finishes on two more bowls, a Natural Edge White Oak and a White Oak with a rim, wife says it looks like "Winne the Pooh's" honey pot:D

The grain inside the wood. It can go in every kind of direction and is highly sought after.

Of course, you can open them up and have nothing worthwhile to use! He brought me a smaller one about a month ago and it was hollow inside the burl! I was able to get quite a few game call/bottle stopper blanks from it, but other then that it was firewood.

Here is a Crow call I turned from a piece of Maple Burl. It had crazy grain and even eyes!

When my back feels better, I will cut it open and see what I have. I usually will use atleast half, and sell the other half to help with costs...but if its really pretty, it will stay here and I will barter off a peice or two in trade for something that is hard to get from another turner:p
