It’s cheaper to do the front but a one tooth on the front is like 2 or 3 on the back.
Also it will affect all the gears not just first.

This may help. http://home.earthlink.net/~gellett/400ex.htm

A 16 tooth front will make you lose torque and you gain speed. You also cannot run a stock case saver b/c the 16t wont fit with it (I run an pro design that does work).

Heres something handy I ran across once:

* A SMALLER than stock FRONT sprocket will give you more TORQUE.

* A LARGER than stock FRONT sprocket will give you more SPEED.

* A SMALLER than stock REAR sprocket will give you more SPEED. * A LARGER than stock REAR sprocket will give you more TORQUE.

* By changing 1 tooth on the FRONT sprocket, that is about equivalent to changing the REAR sprocket 3 teeth.

2 choices:
1. 16 tooth front sprocket, your 1st gear will go from 23 to 25mph. It doesnt seem like much but it is. You also gain top speed

2. 36 tooth rear sprocket gets you about the same as the 16t front.

You honestly shouldnt be riding around in first so much anyways.

A bonus to changing the rear to a smaller sprocket is that you gain more ground clearance

This is correct, just replace torque with acceleration.
