Here's my idea, I have a 18" 1800watt sub & box that I want to use as part of a home theater system. Since I've never heard of a receiver putting out 1800watts per channel, that's not possible. So I'm going to power it with a car amp. The car amp takes DC power to run it, and the only way to do that is to buy a power inverter. Take AC from the wall trans it to DC for the amp. Now problem is, car batteries have a lot more amps than the wall or a power inverter can dish out to run the amplifier causing a huge circuit overload and or a fire. Anybody know a way to solve this?

go buy a home audio amp

You can probably do it, with a little web research. I'd do it for you, but I'm just too lazy. :p

What you need is a power supply. For example, do a web search for SP-320-12 and you'll find a power supply that accepts normal 120V AC input, same as normal household current, and puts out 12V dc voltage, same as a car.

Now, the SP-320-12 isn't quite going to serve your needs, because the 320 portion of the model number means it is rated for 320 watts. You need one that is the same as your amplifier max power (if you have a 300W amp, it's probably 600W max, so you need a 600W power supply) but it can be done. Just takes a little web searching.

I know that the power supply I just mentioned is about $100.

Ok, I did a little bit of research for you.

It's certainly possible to drive that thing with a good 2000w of power, using a RSP-2400-12 power supply, and that kind of power level will almost blow the windows out of your house.

The bad news is, that power supply is about $500, and that's just the power. You still need to buy the amp.

The cost will be too high if you do it that way, you might as well buy a power amp and do it that way. It would be much safer and less of a fire hazard. You can pick up a good used power amp at a pawn shop and run it in mono so you can get the most power out of it. 1800 watts on a sub should shake you right out of you chair.lol

Hide the car battery behind something and connect a battery tender to it.. then connect it like you would in a car... problem solved.
