calling sand riders

im in the process of choosing paddles. I ride hills but no drag racing or anything like that. i usually end up finding myself riding sand trails. im looking for paddles because my knobbies just arent doing it for me anymore. sonof_perdition reccomended sand stars
has anyone ever tried dunestar or any other paddles? thanks in advance guys:D

Skat~Traks are the only way to go, in my opinion.

Check in with the guys at sandlakeduners.com, i presume that is where you do most of your dune riding, they should be able to give you plenty of information about which paddle works best on your quad for the Oregon Dunes

I have sandstars and they work well in many situations. They are a good all around tire. I have no problems getting around the sand trails at Sand Lake and Florence.

A lot of people also swear by Skat-Trak. Many say that they float better than molded tires. They also have a lot of options so it may take a little more time and input from those who run Skat-traks to narrow in on the correct one for the 400ex.

I think the ITP dune stars are designed more for side by sides.

If you want to laugh-go ahead, but:

I considered paddles for awhile and realized that I would have to buy 2 sets of tires and wheels b/c some areas I ride are sand trails/dunes (its actually a sand pit pretty much) and some areas I like to ride are harder packed dirt and rocks. I came to the conclusion i wasnt forking out the cash for 2 sets till I absolutely have to.

So I bought some kenda klaw XCR tires. They are reversible by swapping them from side to side. One way the tread is good for very loose stuff-sandy conditions. Infact they hookup damn near as well as paddles imho. Other way the tread works for more harder stuff.

Your call if you really want paddles, all I know is I have no problems keeping up with my buddys 450R with paddles in the sand pits/dunes we ride.

I've spent a lot of time at Sand Lakes and some time in Florence.

I have a built 440ex. I run 6 paddle "extreme" blade Skat~Traks. No regrets.

The Klaws may hook up decent but if you were to slap a set of Skats on while in the sand you would be amazed. But, for your situation, the Klaws are good enough. I would only recommend Skats for the serious dune rider.

Your probably right, I just ride to much varied terrain right now. That and Im low on funds.

Haulers are the only way to fly. I run 20x10x10 8 paddle extremes and love em. Killer hook up and they wear very well.

pretty sick man. I can just feel the pull of that bike looking at it. You know what would look and function good next is a over-sized oil tank. Maybe put that on your Christmas list :)

I lowered the ride height recently as well, about a 1/2" in the front and 3/4" in the rear. Rides sooo much smoother.


I've been toying with the idea of an oversize tank, I can't bring myself to justify the cost at this time. If the stocker breaks, it will give me an excuse to buy one.

The Yoshi system was money well spent, couldn't be happier. Puts the WB system I had before to shame.

I think the tank looks good and also makes sense to keep that 440 cooler. I know you have a fan as well. So, maybe it's just over kill.

Really, I just wanted to see a pic of your quad.

I'd love to see a after pic now that it's lowered a bit.

although in the past I have had negative things to say about the price gougers at skat you really should compare the weights of equal size tires,skats being lighter, then consider the taxation of horsepower in the sand is huge, so if your looking for a edge go with the lighter tire if you got the money. By the way I only have a cheap set of dune stars but im happy with them

yeah ive thought about how the skats would probably be a good amount better. but im not a hard core sand rider im more of a trail guy but i ride whatever there is to ride. does skat make a v paddle tire all ive seen are haulers and im not sure how well those would do on sand trails and sliding

I have the Skat~Trak Edges 20x10x10 8 paddle tire and really like them for all conditions. I've had GBC dune runners straight 8 paddles 22x11x9's before and didnt like them in the least, also Sand Shark "V" paddle 20x11x9 which were alright just didnt last long. Get on CL you usually find some used ones w/rims for around $100, if ya dont like them just resell and try some more, I just picked up a pair of Skat~Trak Haulers 20x11x9 8 paddle on stock rims for $50, cant wait to try em out this spring, but get on CL and search paddles before you buy new

Skat Traks are the only option for dune riding. They literally have tires for any type of loose conditions. Even their v shaped tires hook up way better than sand stars, and are pounds lighter. If you can afford them, of course. For dune riders, they are more than worth the money.

Some straight cut paddles can be a little bouncy, but are great hill climbers, I prefer
v-cut tires, like sand-skates.

Get out there in the snow if its actually sticking. Snow covered dunes are trippy to ride on.

IMO Glamis is the only place outside of Oregon I enjoy going to the dunes. I guess I'm spoiled :D

Even glamis gets cold as hell. I went on mlk day (jan 17th or somthn like that) a few years back and we got there at night and just went to sleep in the back of our suv. Woke up the next morning and we couldnt get out because the doors were frozen shut. luckily one of our guys who was sleeping in his own truck was able to get out and he de-iced ours for us so we could get out and ride lol.

sandstars are the best for a all around dune riding. if your going straight like drags or just climbing hills go with haulers but if your going with an all around dune riding trails and hills go with the sand stars. this is what i run on my 400ex and i love them.

Sandstars weigh a ton!! Skat Trak Edge is the way to go if you want a V paddle.

10s can just be to hard to turn I prefer 9's. 20x11x9 works well.

21x12x8 here. Makes for a nice footprint and since the Skats mounted on DWT Blue Labels only weight in at 13lbs a piece, the ol' EX turns them with ease.
