So im debating on tearing down my bike and geting my frame, a arms, and possibly swingarm powdered coated. My question is, is that how hard is it to remove the swing arm bolt? Also could i just leave the swing arm on the frame? I dont know how powdercoating works so im assuming its not like anodizing where you dip it in a vat.

powdercoating involves sandblasting to clean the metal then it is electrically charged and the powder particals are charged also which makes them stick to the metal. Then it is baked at 400+ degree temps. You wouldnt want to leave the swingarm on the frame as sand from the blasting could get in there and destroy the sleeves and bearings. And leaving the swingarm on means leaving the motor in. I had to cut my swingarm bolt out of my quad as the kid that had it before me never had it apart and never greased it or anything so the bolt rusted to the sleeves in the swingarm and woulndt move. tried heat, penatrating oil, sledge hammer, ect....but the bolt on my other 450 came right out. so theres the possibility you could run into some problems, or maybe not.

Its not hard, I do mine every winter. You'll really get to know your bike. Just stay organized and don't rush through it. Everything will need to come apart including bearings and such out of the swinger and a-arms if you plan on pc them. Don't shy away from it, its a good/fun experience. Enjoy!

If you aren't doing anything to the swingarm, then why would you remove the bearings? Unless you are replacing them?

I was thinking that to remove the swingarm bolt you have to pull out a bearing or bushing on the outside, Im not sure thats how my old trail boss was and im at work and havent had a chance to take a look at my manual yet.

Naw you don't have to take any bearings or bushings out. Just unscrew the pivot bolt and should just come out.

you MUST remove your swingarm bolt unless your gonna powder coat your motor all at once! if your gonna powdercoat then why would u skimp out and not do a full teardown? just take everything apart replace bearings and seals and have a fresh bike when done!

Im thinking about doing my 04 450r. Im calling about the price to sand blast and powder coat the frame tomorrow, but I am wondering how much it will cost for bearings, seals, etc...

i was gonna get my frame done but i came up with this problem, if youre swing arm bolt is stuck you might have to cut it out- thats 25$ right there for a new one, bearings if needed which you most likely will are like 100$, i was qouted 225 for frame a arms and some misc. parts

Do yourself a favor and get your swingarm pivot bolt and sleeves Molycoated by Pappy and then you won't have to worry about it seizing up.
